I was intrigued by the PO20 Arcade but I dunno. Still on the fence about getting even one of the pocket operators. Dunno how I'd fit it into my chain of gear. Eh. I'm looking forward to more info on the OP Z tho.

I've got the PO14, but I've not used the sequencer on it; just playing about with the sounds 'live' when recording. I'm pretty shit with the learning curve of new sequencers, so have found more use composing on LSDJ and then using MIDIOUT to something like a Korg Volca. Since the POs don't have MIDI input I've kind of shied away from using them a lot. They're cool, but more a fun sound creation gadget than useful for compositions (for me anyway).

midi out from LSDJ to a volca? May I ask how (and which volca)?

This is what I followed:

I've used both the Bass and the Sample.

I am no expert in chiptune so this may not follow the "rules"  of the genre wink

Nice!

Those sounds are synthesized in real time or are stored in a rom?

Not sure about all of them, but previous models have been based primarily on that idea:

You can get flats/sharps by using effect parameters, but it feels like a bit of a pain to do so.

Well in that case I declare that the whole pocket op series is a load of bollocks.

If you write most of your tracks in D or A minor, rather than C major, it's not too bad, but yeah it's a bit of a silly restriction. It would have been nice if the scale could at least be transposed up/down without using up the effect slot.

The PO-12 (rhythm) has two micro synths that can play a full chromatic scale, but they're limited in sound.

I actually just recently recorded two classic C64 chiptunes on these machines:

Commando High Score (by Rob Hubbard, 1985):

Delta (by Rob Hubbard, 1987):

And speaking of sharps and flats, at least Delta is using a lot of both black and white keys - it's possible with some tricks smile

It sounds great, but the diatonic-only way of composing would prevent me for ever to get one sad
It would have been easy to use the current way of entering notes, and add the sharp and flat with the rotary switch...

For those users of the pocket operator series of devices who have found themselves in the unfortunate position of being restricted to using only those scales which do not contain any sharps or flats, one has taken the liberty of jotting down a few scales which may or may not be of use in that most dire and odious situation. One wholeheartedly hopes that you will find the following commodious and beneficial in  your musical endeavours:

Musical Scales with no Sharps or Flats:

A natural minor (Aeolian) [WHWWHWW]:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G

C Major (Ionian) [WWHWWWH]:
C, D, E, F, G, A, B

D pentatonic minor [ m3WWm3W]:
D, F, G, A, C

E pentatonic minor [m3WWm3W]:
E, G, A, B, D

A pentatonic minor [m3WWm3W]:
A, C, D, E, G

C pentatonic Major [WWm3Wm3]:
C, D, E, G, A

F pentatonic Major [WWm3Wm3]:
F, G, A, C, D

G pentatonic Major [WWm3Wm3]:
G, A, B, D, E

D dorian [WHWWWHW]:
D, E, F, G, A, B, C

E phrygian [HWWWHWW]:
E, F, G, A, B, C, D

F lydian [WWWHWWH]:
F, G, A, B, C, D, E

G mixolydian [WWHWWHW]:
G, A, B, C, D, E, F

B locrian [HWWHWWW]:
B, C, D, E, F, G, A

* m3 = minor third, H = half tone, W = whole tone.
