Summer Carnival '92 - Recca (Famicom)

Oooh forgot to mention some!

Nemesis 1 and 2 (GB) The music is AMAZING.
Project S-11 (GBC) Great game! Aleksi Eeben and Purple Motion did the music.
Raystorm (PSX) There's an HD remake of this for XBLA and PSN. Too bad I own neither of those consoles sad

Umm... nobody likes Squoon for the NES? It's an amazing game!

Also, Aero Fighters 2 is excellent, as is ASO 2 (Alpha Mission 2), both of which are for the Neo Geo.

Lastly, everyone who likes shmups MUST play Bangai-Oh! for the N64.

I have to play that!
This is my favorite NES shmup:

Really fun with 2 players.
Nice music too.

I've never really played any NES shmups.

Alex Mauer did suggest this one to me not too long ago:

Guardian Legend (NES). It's sort of a hybrid between a shmup and a zelda game. Pretty badass in my opinion.

Eliminate Down (Genesis)--I actually had to go play this game for a minute just thinking about it. So badass.
Darius Gaiden (Saturn) for the music, graphics and multiple routes.
Thunder Force III (Genesis), because I still don't understand why people like IV better.
Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
Axelay (SNES)
I would say Metal Storm (NES), but I suspect that's "borderline"/run-n-gun.

I love shmups. My faves are:
- ikaruga
- all gradius games including V
- all rtype games including Final
- all thunderforce games excluding VI

I know, pretty standard sort of selection, but that's ok.

Long live shmups!

Radiant Silvergun
Ikaruga
R-Type
All of the Touhou games, my favorite probably being Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
Gradius

I just tried Flying Shark on my Atari STE. It's really hard! I think I'd be better with a D-pad rather than a joystick though. wink

I'm giving a bash at SALAMANDER COLLECTION on PSP, it has Salamander, LifeForce, Salamander 2, Xexex and the MSX Gradius 2 with revamped graphics (a.k.a. NEMESIS '90 KAI on teh Sharp X68000).
It's a pretty fucking cool compilation, I recommend it to any shmups fan.
