I admit this is pretty damn niche but it might be useful for a couple of folk. A patch/bank editor for the Yahama FB01 appeared on sourceforge fairly recently and the stable version came out a couple of days ago. The only documentation thus far is in French but Beware and myself both have FB01 units and the editor up and running and are slowly working out the functions.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/fb01editor/

The FB01 is interesting cause it has a YM2164 chip which is very very similar to the YM2151 sound in some of the Japanese earlyish computers like the X68000 and Sharp X1. Said computers are hard to find, expensive and very sparsely documented in English. The FB01 on the other hand is cheap as chips and common as hell. The only downside to it was that the (I think) only editor  was for the ST. Hopefully this editor will make the machine an interesting option for people.

If anyone speaks French and would like to translate the documentation, I'm sure the developer would be pleased (since he's already planning to do it, just hasn't done it yet). ^_^

anyone who wants to hear examples of the FB01 in use check out my blast album on 8bitpeoples, or my blast 2 album which is here: http://headlessbarbie.com/dl/mp3-blast2.zip

whats the difference between OPM (sharp) and OPP (fb01)? - well... OPM has a noise generator which substitutes one of the FM voices... and OPP has midi built in on the chip - other than that they sound the same

one more thing to note... the OPM is contained in the DX100, and DX21 keyboards.. the FB01 is basically the module version of the DX100 and it contains the OPP

*note: OPM = YM2151, OPP = YM2164

Hmmm, pretty interesting sound. I'm liking the bass. So I'm guessing that since it's running on midi, you could sync this and another piece of hardware through the midi software? I'm thinking I could run this for Bass and some drums and background while playing a Gameboy for main melodies and all.

Blast 2 Level 7 is hilariously creepy. Nice voice acting. xD

This looks awesome. Ive been using YSEDITOR (atari st) and Emagic Sounddiver (windows) before but its nice with a software that is free and still supported. For windows you can also use MidiQuest but its kinda pricey. So I'm gonna keep my eyes on this one.

Yep, in theory, you could get any midi sequencer like Renoise or Piggy Tracker or Open MPT and use the FB01 for some of the sounds and hook it up to another device for samples or even a gameboy with Nanoloop or LSDJ for some additional sounds.

sweet, been wanting an editor for this. got one of these synths a couple years ago (thanks for the recommendation alex), I used it on "zig takeoff" and "master ov time 1982 - 1991" and a bunch of new shit that's gonna be on my new release. best idea is using it with drum samples ripped from sonic the hedgehog for extra genesis aesthetic styles go

I speak french. The file 'aide.pdf' is the help in french. Frédéric Meslin wrote this help. Globally, he talks about FM synthesis (envelopes, waveforms, ADSR, operators...). It is not a tutorial at all for the FB01.

Check wikipedia for better explanation :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_ … _synthesis

And if you have comment or issue, write to him on Sourceforge.net :

Oh, it's just about FM?  I had hoped it was about using the software.

I appreciate this is a hell of a necrobump but the patch editor is now at v 2.11 and I have FINALLY had some luck with making the little beast work with my hardware. Also numeric displays for all values.

Sorry, forgot to add, there is now a comprehensive user manual!
