One of my favorite songs as of late!

Margo Guryan - Sunday Morning
from Take a Picture, 1968

Brilliant pop music! The sound of the drums and guitar noodling and time changes and basically everything about this song is so fucking pleasant. big_smile

Very cool. The new Charlotte Gainsbourg stuff with Air reminds me of this!

I wish I had a piano and could write music on paper easily!

If you've got the space, and the means to move one, people are almost always giving away free pianos on Craigslist.  Off topic I know, sorry.

Ah yes you're right! I forgot about that. I'll have to look into it once I move out to the west coast. Cheers smile

I think the more important part is, at least for me, preserving the feeling of freedom you have with hobbies. Certainly, doing comissioned work can be fun (mostly for the challenges involved, as you mentioned) and the reward of seeing it comming together is very satisfying. However, I'm easily being stressed by pressure of commitment, which can build up pretty fast when your creativity decides to ignore the outlines of a project completely and wanders off to something different instead (which mine is prone to do). The fun always, always ends once money is involved sad

Haha, yea that's true. It's definitely not always easy to write music for other people and can be stressful at times. But if you're lucky you can pick and choose your projects in such a way that you're always pushing your boundaries but not giving yourself a stroke. And hopefully you don't tackle too much work that you can't afford to have an off day. I think the money's just proof that you're providing something of value to someone, anyone. People gotta eat!

Cool. I put this side by side with FM8 and made the same patch from scratch in each and they sound identical. I wonder if they built FM8 using Reaktor.

I was hoping this would sound raunchier than FM8, which always sounds really clean. I wonder if there's a way to use some lower-resolution sine waves to get that going.

Also, it's important to recognize your own energy. Some people can iterate like 12 times a day *COUGH*little-scale*COUGH* but some people simply can't. If you have endless reserves of creative energy to dedicate, writing music for a living might be for you. It's also a rewarding challenge to try to write great music inside of other peoples' limitations (sound familiar?)

I've been writing music for video games and it's really fantastic. The only downside is always having to be around the computer so much. I wish I had a piano and could write music on paper easily!

I think about this all the time. Will choosing illustration as a career ruin my ability to enjoy it for fun? Time will only tell, it seems.

I think it's important to choose which answer gives you more free time to hone your craft.

A really good quote from Steve Reich:

“People say you teach during the day and you’re free at so-and-so, but there’s a certain energy that goes into teaching people, it seems to me… and if you don’t give them that energy, then you’re immoral. And if you do give them that energy, then you’re wiped out. Because there’s only so much energy anyone has. So I’d rather drive a cab - I had a good time driving the cab, I wasn’t invested in it, you know what I mean? I could think about music, I could bug the cab, I could take time off to play a show – it really fit me. And I was making more money than most assistant professors too!”

Hey Guys,

I've made a number of chip patches over the last year or so using the THOR modular synth in Reason that I think are pretty cool, so I thought I might share some with you guys and hopefully anyone else who's made patches could come forward and share some of theirs!

One day not too long ago I had been listening to a lot of demoscene type tracks and really focusing on the production ... I kept noticing a particular technique involved in creating really awesome sounding pulse leads that involved not just changing the duty cycle on every note but also moving the panning around constantly ... so I created a patch that does this randomly using Sample & Hold, and also has fade-in vibrato/tremolo. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play on keyboard. smile

Anyone else been using THOR? Or any softsynth really, I'd love to hear what people have been coming up with.

I really like this release. Glad we got to put it out. I think "Looped Luciferin" is my favorite on repeat listens. It just cuts through to my gut and makes me want to dance.
