That's how I mostly used to do tempo changes pre-chip. I generally don't like many abrupt tempo changes in a song without a common pulse (like if a section at 120 or something finishes, pauses, then a brand new section starts around 150) unless it's like for obvious reasons like using it to "speed up" a repeating section.

Apparently it's cool to hate n00bs like this place is Ultimate Guitar or something.

Welcome, MostNoble9! I liked your song. Great groove throughout, decent thick kick, and cool smooth lead starting at 0:47. But that coin sample at at 1:23...get rid of that shit. wink

Loving where this thread is going. It's great to learn more about where people are coming from and where they want to go. Obviously I understand that music is a huge part of everyone's life here but seriously fuck it-we are all a lot more than simply audio recordings, image branding, and artist names. We are people. Who are you?

To the last few posts, priming the conversation further: Now what is your life outside of music? Think hard about that-it's pretty tough when you think about it. I'm sure it's tough for just about everyone on here, actually!

Yes! Thank you! I still think you can have super interesting rhythms within just straight 4/4 and no 'omg polyrhythms' needed. Just keep the syncopation interesting and don't ignore the pulse.

I agree! but, I'm not sure from your wording whether the comment about syncopation in 4/4 was a separate thought, or you assumed that I meant that these pop music examples were using that method in lieu of straight up using a balls out odd meter. because all these pop examples are notated in 11/8, 7/8, 5/8, 7/4, and some even weirder!

I just want to give writing props where they are due wink

My bad-separate thought. I'm so glad you mentioned peter gabriel- Solisbury Hill is like my fav example of naturally sounding unconventional meters

The irony is that 90% of Meshuggahs stuff is in 4/4.

Exactly! They never forget about the PULSE smile

I learned all I know about music theory and history through the most basic means-going to the library and checking out music textbooks (now, just ordering them online or getting them at a bookstore).

totally off-topic, would you mind sharing some of your favorite music theory books? I'm getting hooked on it myself but I just have a couple online sources I've been reading.

Mark Levine's Jazz Theory and Jazz Piano books are great even if you have no interest in Jazz whatsoever. They teach interval relationships and chord patterns without all the classical music history fluff. I wasn't interested in being Leonard Bernstein, I just wanted to help my own workflow and those books are great for that. I'm also reading Max Reger's small paperback on modulation. Should be interesting. Best piece of information I can give is find a piano/keyboard. The keyboard is easily the best instrument to visualize music theory on, IMO!

y'know i heard from a few people that a significant number of musicians end up studying psychology - sounds about right! say an0va, how long did you have to spend on your degree (bachelor & masters)? i've just started this year and i'm looking at 6 years minimum for clinical - is it any different in the states?

i think growing up is realising that everyone is just fucking insane and that you're totally okay with it!

Hello fellow psych fan! I did four years undergrad and two years grad so yeah, six years. It depends on what you want to do though, it may include med school! Perhaps you're right, maybe we are all insane

Thanks! I figure everyone else was being straight up so I might as well too. I have nothing to hide.

* TONS of pop music is written in odd or compound meter, from beatles to soundgarden, zepplin, red hot chili peppers, sting, peter gabriel. so its not just guys with pointed ibanez guitars counting in their head while palm-muting.

Looks great!

Actually, those suggestions you gave are a VERY tech metal thing to do, hence the Meshuggah reference

I only listen to music in 27/ARGH

i think people love talking about time signatures because they think it's like some arcane classical music science or something

hey i had a disclaimer! if it isn't musical, don't do it at all IMO. I loathe overly technical music for the sake of technicality. With my example, I can tell you right now that Dino and the guys don't even think of it this way (by the numbers), they all just write music and then count it after the fact. I'm just saying that if I didn't break it down into sections like that myself, learning how to play stuff like that would be tough!

yeah honestly who wants to hear a 21 measure phrase till it repeats? Unless you're meshuggah or something

On an aside, though: It's important to remember song writing. If someone writes a beautiful melody and chord structure with just a stagnant 50% pulse width I totally won't hold it against him (or her!). But at least throw some Vxx/4xx on that shit AMIRITE

Holy crap I never noticed how freaking weird silly this music video is. Lost it at "Live from the black house" news feed.
Also, I really miss turntable scratches to introduce a verse.

Sometimes I *like* that 50% pulse d00d.  Don't hate on the 50%!

No hate! Hit me up on g-mail soon btw
