If you wanted to get crazy, I'm sure there's a way to switch between clocks based on pitch so you can get the low notes when you need them on the lower clock, and toggle to a faster clock for higher pitches.

I'm liking the answers I'm seeing, so far.

When I see Bit Shifter play, he's swapping in and out cartridges, changing a few things to songs he's already written, mixing fading. Like Sam says, I think this is what a DJ does- though I'm really glad he doesn't call himself "DJ Bit Shifter"

Edit: To be honest, defiantsystem's opinion is pretty close to mine, too.

I brought it up in a conversation with a friend this morning. There are a lot of people who compose chipmusic who call themselves DJ ______.
I don't have a problem with it- you can call yourself whatever you want- but there are many times when it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

If you're onstage with a single Gameboy, I don't really see how you can be dj-ing anything. Two Gameboys, that I can believe. A laptop? It's just a generalization, but you're probably just pressing play. If you remix something and play it that makes sense to call yourself a DJ, but writing only original song and calling yourself a DJ? How does it fit?

Additional question: In electronic/VGM/chipmusic, what's the difference between a cover and a remix? It's kind of an extreme analogy because she performs rock, not electronic music but bear with me. Linda Ronstadt would never consider herself a DJ even though her claim to fame is re-interpreting rock songs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mocking anyone who calls themselves "DJ" but I want to hear why you chose the prefix.

Genesis composer reporting:

I've used both Deflemask and TFM/ VGM to compose, but what's more important to me right now is the live element.
As of right now, live Genesis is very plug-and-play... there really isn't room for improvisation or alteration once it's one the cart.
What I'd like to see is an interface that controls the operators.

Picture a tracker where you program most of the instruments and the melodic parameters via computer, but allows you to use the Genesis controllers to change ADSR, Multiplicity, algorithms, tempo, pattern lists in a live setting. That's what I think is more important to opening up doors.

don't rule out an open mic busk.

Rule it out?! I WELCOME it!!! If there's a place to plug in and someone with gear to lend, I will help set up, facilitate, tear down, and return when it's done.

So I jokingly offered apt - but that's actually a real offer, I'm pretty near Wash Sq. but I would need to figure out PA. Mixer I could hook up.

I know the staff at Next Level Arcade down in Brooklyn, and they have a PA. I could talk to them to see if they'd be down? They also have some music games, SSF4 and some candy cabs, so maybe we could coordinate some mini-event.
The only thing is that I'm out of town until right before the show, but I could look into it remotely.

Be careful when you joke to passionate people tongue
Yes, by all means. If you pitch it to them and they're sympathetic to the cause, I will pass you my phone number and I'll start preparing with them. Same promise:  I will help set up, facilitate, tear down, and return when it's done. I can't do it alone, but I am happy to do much of the leg work.

There's been discussion about the format for the "official open mic" on the facebook event page. https://www.facebook.com/events/183401848449295
It seems that people are worried about coming a long way without being able to publicly perform material. I'm starting this thread to see if we can have our own musical show and tell during the daylight hours of the weekend so everyone can share a song (mayhaps, two). What we'd need is:

-A place to host us
-An amplifier or PA system
-Mixers or a means of input

I think a lunchtime musicshare would be a great way to pull people together outside of the formal theater.
Time's against us, but can New York work with me to bring this to fruition?

"Manuel can be found here"

haha! Thank goodness, I'd been looking for him for ages!

I can see forever!

I really want to go but I need somewhere to crash afterward!
