Just wanted to post that update -- a DMG07 totally works perfectly with a Teensyboy as long as you mod it little-scale style

well you know I thought it was pretty cool that someone who worked hard for a long time got to play a huge festival, but it's more of a bummer because I wanted to see him and I didn't get to

since this thing got bumped -- he was actually slated to perform at coachella last year but canceled like a couple weeks beforehand because of "personal issues." kind of a bummer

Max -- thanks! I pretty much just wanted confirmation that a DMG07 would work with a Teensyboy from someone who knew more about it than I did; I figured that it would work, but I wasn't 100% sure. I pretty much just want the 3 DMGs just because any more is kind of overkill
All we need to do is get that Teensyboy working then! I'll update this thread when it works. I'm sure Anthony will have something to say about it too!

Ok, I've been doing furious googling/searching on this topic and I can't really find a definitive answer other than Tim's undocumented DMG07 Arduinoboy hack, so I'm going to ask: what will it take for me to get multiple Gameboys synchronized to the same DAW (preferably Ableton)? Nothing fancy like different sync modes per Gameboy, just the same signal from the DAW to multiple Gameboys so they can all follow the same clock.
So far I've kind of been attached to the idea of just making a normal Teensyboy (with katsumbhong's help) and then using a modded DMG07 instead of a link cable to send MIDI through. In my head it works because the DMG07 just allows clock messages to go to multiple Gameboys, but in my case it wouldn't be a master LSDJ sending those messages -- it would be a DAW. Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea if that would work in practice, because I'm not really 100% clear on how MIDI works in general.
But I'm not totally attached to the idea of the Teensyboy -- if it worked, I would be open to just splicing a MIDI cable to a DMG07 or something; I was originally talking to the guy who runs Xiwi Electronics to see if I could do that with one of his Arduinoboys, but I couldn't get a definitive answer on it so I didn't go for it. Basically, any help with this is appreciated!

popping in here after months to post this: http://www.djworx.com/skratchworx/reviews/km.php
korg doesn't make them anymore so you can only get them second hand, but if you can find one for about 300-400 then you're golden! the km402 is your four channel variant and km202 is the 2 channel.
separate post-fader fx for each channel, which is primarily what you're looking for I think. I had the same problem with a kp3 muddying up my sound (my 4-channel didn't have send/return) until I decided to bite the bullet and get one of those.
only drawback is that you're stuck with the miniKP fx, but most of the good ones from the kp3 are on the miniKP anyway, and unless you're planning on doing crazy sampling/looping/etc, the kp3 and the miniKP are roughly similar

you downloaded the Unity Web Player and everything? because the player is really cool and makes big 3D graphics run on machines you wouldn't think they could run on!
I'll be releasing a mobile version of this in the future, so maybe you'll be able to play that

I made another game! This one is way different from my first game Eternities -- it's abstract and loop-based.
It features a couple of artists you guys might be familiar with -- Henry Homesweet, Decktonic, A_Rival, Trash80, among others
It was made in Unity, so you'll need to download the Unity Web Player but it's like 3 MB so it's not even a big deal.
There's going to be a mobile release, and I'll probably update this thread when that happens. But it won't happen for a couple weeks.
Let me know what you think! Scroll down on the page for instructions

Re: Theory Necessary for LSDJ? (20 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
something important to note about music theory is that it doesn't automatically make you "better" at music -- music theory is a method of deconstructing music to figure out what makes things sound the way they do. it isn't something you necessarily learn in order to make music; rather, it's something that helps you talk about music in a language other than "it sounds happy" or "it sounds like sabrepulse."
I find that too often people think of music theory as just a skill that you can put on a checklist of things that make people musicians. people can write great music without knowing the theory behind it, but what the theory does is let you recontextualize what you're doing. so instead of talking about just "sounds" you start talking about "notes" and "chords" and "rhythms." once you're able to hear the theory behind the music you listen to, it gets way easier to take those principles and apply them to your own music.
so if I were to advise you on how to go about studying it, I'd say learn about a specific thing like key signatures or whatever, and then listen to music that you like and try to deconstruct it in terms of that thing you studied. so if you studied something like inverted chords, listen to a piece of music and try to spot when you hear inverted chords. and more generally, try listening to the rhythms and listening to how certain tones are arranged against other tones, and figure out why you like or dislike a piece of music by describing it in terms of music theory, rather than describing it by referencing genre or other songs. saying that you dislike something because "it sounds bad" is way less constructive than saying you dislike it because there isn't enough harmonic variation (but it's WAY less pretentious too).
last thing: don't get caught up on notation, i.e. the way people transcribe music. stuff like grand staffs and treble clefs and bass clefs and stuff like that. a lot of people like to talk about music theory in terms of notation, but it's important to realize that a piece of music can be interpreted any number of ways, of which notation is but one. it's important to know, yes, but just know that it's just a visual representation of what is an aural experience.

Re: Playing LSDJ in nightclubs (17 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
we might have different expectations about what a nightclub is! in san diego, there's a REALLY BIG difference between what clubs are and what bars are, so I might just have a skewed viewpoint. the clubs I go to are super hardcore about getting people drunk and laid, and would never throw a themed event that didn't cater to the clientele that frequented the venue.
I'm not disagreeing with you though -- I wouldn't really want to play a gig at a real nightclub, and my real point is just that if your goal is to play a nightclub, be prepared to deal with both an audience that doesn't care and a booking staff that thinks of you as a disposable resource, for almost zero pay and zero "exposure."

Re: Playing LSDJ in nightclubs (17 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Not to be a huge downer/dick.. but if you have to ask this, you are most likely not prepared to play an LSDJ set (especially of your own tunes) to a nightclub crowd
yeah, as a guy who frequents a lot of clubs in SD, boa's pretty much got it.
think of it this way: imagine the bro-iest, douche-iest dude you've ever met. he doesn't even care about music, really. now imagine that you have to convince him that your music is cool SIMPLY BY PLAYING IT. you have five seconds.
oh btw all his friends are drunk and not really listening to you
if the answer to "could I do that?" is no, then you have a LOT of work to do.
and I'm not saying this to disparage clubs or anything, because I like dance music, but it's a pretty brutal scene. as far as they're concerned, you're just another DJ, and if you can't get people buying drinks in like 10 miinutes, you're done, and they'll get their resident DJ to cover your slot in 10 seconds
EDIT: I don't think that anyone's ever really done an LSDJ-only club set, honestly. LSDJ + DAW, sure, but never just LSDJ.
my girlfriend added another good point -- clubs don't really "bill" artists in the way that venues do. if you're playing a club to get your name out there, you'll have to play a LOT of gigs just to get your name in 10 pt. font at the bottom of a flyer. clubs only really advertise headliners, and everyone else isn't really worth advertising because again, the average club goer doesn't really care about music, and again, you're just another DJ to them.

I'll apologize for SD being inactive -- we haven't been throwing shows very often. you're welcome to try and get something going, and I'm willing to help if you're down to do it (I can tell you about venues and stuff like that), but I've been too busy and burned out on the scene to attempt to throw shows and stuff

Re: LIGHT WALL - Looking for help (8 replies, posted in Graphics, Artwork & Design)
you can just grab a couple programmable LED strips and put those into a tube: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/12027
if you're looking for more programmability (I'm sorry) this kickstarter project got funded a couple months ago and looks to be in good shape: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/740 reinvented
then just grab a bunch of translucent or transparent (depending on your effect) tubes and throw the LEDs in, hook them up to an arduino, power them and then do whatever you want! that's how I'd approach it anyway
EDIT: they look pretty sweet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyXX5xsy1sA#t=41

Re: Motivation (41 replies, posted in General Discussion)
great artists dont work on their stuff when they have zero motivation, id think that no one does anything if they have zero motivation, that is what motivation is. yeah people can do stuff when they are feeling inspired but that's different
again, if a mere lack of motivation was reason enough for these "great artists" to stop work on their art, then we'd be in a much shittier place than where we are right now.
the reason I keep telling people to just do things isn't some empathy problem of mine. I say it because I've totally been places in my life where I would have to practice and perform while my piano teacher told me I was shit, essentially. I've gone out and played shows to five people at a dive bar when I would SO MUCH RATHER just stay home with my girlfriend instead. so I definitely understand what it feels like to have little motivation to do things.
I guess the difference between then and now is that back then, I had other people telling me to "just do it", and so I just did it, even if I didn't really understand why. Now I realize that them telling me to just do things was a way of saying "yeah, you have motivation to do this thing you don't want to do, it just isn't coming from yourself." basically, those other people WEREN'T ALLOWING me to be a lazy person.
that's why I have such a big problem with all of these motivation/inspiration threads popping up. I get not having motivation to do things, but when the solution is to go onto the internet (which is the best drug in that it provides instant gratification and no physical side effects) and post about how little motivation you have, that's a problem. normally, I'd just ignore these threads, because if you post a thread about how motivated you aren't and no one responds, the lack of response is essentially them NOT ALLOWING you to not be motivated, either be motivated and participate in our community or get out.
but now I see these threads pop up and there are like pages and pages of responses, and I guess I just feel like I should step in and be that guy telling you to just do things, because it seems like there are less people willing to do that these days (and not even just in this forum -- everywhere). in the end, I appreciated it when other people told ME to do things, even if I FUCKING HATED IT at the time, because it meant that I didn't have time to dwell on how lazy I wanted to be or how little I wanted to do something. those people held me accountable, in a sense. even if everything you do sounds like shit, you're doing better than everyone else that DOESN'T write music or do whatever you do.
that's all it is, really. I'd rather have people write music and feel shitty about it than have them not write music and still feel shitty about it.
