I'll limit myself to the chip scene.

goto80 - the weirdness. c64 mastery.

Peer - put out the best LSDJ EP ever.

Pajjama - every release is crazy and unique. beautiful stuff.

The Depreciation Guild - a very standout band that had some awesome songwriting.

What exactly is your recording situation? If you have a computer, there's probably a mic-in jack on it. Take a basic male-to-male 3.5mm audio cable, plug it into the headphone jack, plug the other end into the computer, pop open audacity and record. That's how I did every gameboy song I ever wrote.

If you want to step it up a bit you could just mute each track, throw the individual tracks up in your DAW of choice, and mix it and process it or whatever too.

If you really need actual recording stuff just save up and haunt craigslist like it's nobody's business. The deals come to those who are patient (and those who haggle).

If chipmusic is what you want to do, work towards that. If chipmusic isn't what you want to do, go do what you want to do. If you don't know what you want to do don't be so eager to give up on what you already have. Take time and think.

Heosphoros, Norrin Radd, maybe even virt.

I'd keep the broken ones for parts or try cleaning them out and see if that helps. SID chips will only become harder to come by in the future. Cynthcart is fun. I still haven't bought a flashcart for mine to work with. I need more space before I can really put it somewhere.

I also advocate GoatTracker if you just want to make SID music and play it off a real machine. Just remember if you're using Goat Tracker to set it to NTSC so it'll play on your machine right. I also had to change GT's tuning tables so it's correctly pitched in NTSC.

artist:
1. Sure.
2. No preference really. I like the DIY ethos and I love all the people I've met through smaller labels. Though most of those guys focus on vinyl or cassettes.
3. Chipflip, datamask, 8bp for chip stuff. (where the hell did datamask go by the way?!)
4. lol idk.
5. No idea. I do a lot of stuff myself besides mastering I guess. I don't know how to master properly.

customer:
1. Labels have definitely introduced me to artists I normally wouldn't find. I've perused through many discographies looking for new stuff. I guess that's an influence.
2. Depends. If it's a label I like, sure I'll support them.
3. Touch & Go, Deathwish, Have Fun Records. Touch & Go set the standard for indie labels, Deathwish has a good following and I think they run the label well, HFR because my friend who runs it is passionate about what he does and it's very inspiring to see him and his label growing.
4. I don't know. Free to $5? If it's just a download I really don't want to pay more than $5.
5. I like bandcamp so I guess so.
6. Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I think the world of physical releases has more creative opportunities than digial (though I really love all the audio/visual release stuff i've seen from people like maxo and hizmi).
7. T-Shirts and stickers are great. Especially if you're playing shows.

is this not BSK? https://soundcloud.com/bokusatsu-shoujo-koubou

I'm also pretty sure USK is still doing chip stuff.

oh nice! after 8bc's demise i never knew what happened to BSK. also never knew what it stood for haha.

Where did David Sugar go? Last I heard he was doing some electro thing but that was back in like 2009.

Is USK still doing chip stuff? I never hear much about him these days sad. His myspace used to have some crazy fl studio tracks that reminded me a lot of Ken Ishii, but I liked a lot of his chip stuff as well. and on a similar note, what about cow'p and bsk? they still doing things?

Ok last one. I know Vim still does music, but did he ever do another gameboy release other than Extended Loo Break?

Started learning basic theory and stuff around 14. Trial and error mostly with chip stuff, synthesis, etc. Picked up guitar around 18 or 19.

Time to necro an old thread. So I wanted to tune GoatTracker to proper 440hz so I can playback my own songs on a real NTSC C64. I edited the part in the .cfg file where you can change default tuning frequency and threw in the value 423.874. Seems to have tuned it to 440hz perfectly. Hopefully my plan works and playback on a real C64 will be tuned correctly.
