You can get more out of LAME using VBR instead. You could probably aim for a lower mean bit rate and still get a lot better sound.

There were things like this before, for example those 2xSAI engines in emulators. They smooth up the pixels and give similar results in real time. Not as smooth, but pretty close.

If this algorithm works in real time it might be good for HD upscaling of old games. Will make them look really cartoony.

I think they wrote that it's too slow to realistically be performed in real time atm. It will enable Nintendo to quickly churn out a bunch of half-assed remakes, for sure, though! smile

Skimming over the intro to their research paper, there doesn't seem to be any reasons stated for why the hell any one would ever need an algorithm that can turn pixel art into, uh, "not pixel art.

Try reading the "previous work" section. It lists previous research and applications of upscaling and vectorizing algorithms, fields where the work is highly relevant. You should also try reading the conclusions. Please, at least skim over the whole paper before assuming that the research is useless.

It's on short notice, but hopefully it'll happen again soon enough... and hopefully not in the middle of the week!

A friend at local hackerspace forskningsavdelningen is picking up the pieces, starting out slow with a thursday night hangout. I will play there together with salkiniztor of 047 fame! Here's a phasebook page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=199711510072743

I don't know about registering, but you can play a lot with the open source UADE, or the Delix XMPlay plugin if you're on windows.

The bin file for the TFC player is a plugin, so you can't launch it like you would a ROM dump. It has to be installed and stuff. I don't remember the exact procedure, but maybe a hint is enough.

As for the second problem, are you sure it has to do with the cartridge? It sounds like something you'd experience after playing everything in 60 Hz on emulators and then switching to a 50 Hz PAL system. I put a switch on my Megadrive so that I can flip between 50/60 Hz. You should look into that, as it was very easy and lets you play Japanese/US/60Hzland games at their correct speeds.

I can vaguely relate to the concept of a "zone," when you get into a good flow, but whatever it is I don't think it's quite like in video games.

Wow! Is it possible to get a shipping estimate on the bbc b and the +2a to Sweden?

I have given the idea a good deal of thought, and I think it would be great to go forward and start working on a new CD to distribute via the web, showing off the best of the 70+ platforms that we now support on the site. Its also a good opportunity for the site to work together as a team to create something great

I'm guessing a mp3 collection, then.

I camped for Blip Europe, if that counts! But yeah, it was at a camping site within walking distance from the venue.

There's a huge queue, I think. If you preordered and log in on the website, I think that you can see your place in line.
