Scratch everything I just said lol. These are awesome! Definitely will be buying 1 to play with and more if it works out how I'm hoping.
no, i won't convert the whole project to that. just make a new revision, it'd require a new mould for a change like that.
Good to know man lol. Can't wait to see what's next though. ~fingers crossed~ for clear cases or black cases soon.
Well back to topic but still semi off. These are two more of my babies. My green boy which I have posted before but why not add it here right. Also the kitsch case a friend of mine bought for me up at blip and sent to me with black screen and GID buttons, also posted previously. The ticket to this post isn't exactly its more to show off the epicness that I just got today for 8$ total! I'm a huge Star Wars fan as I'm sure many of you here are. Check it out...
Starting from left to right. We have original Star Wars post 1million copies sold. Then comes the good stuff. All three of the original DMG Star Wars game PRE 1million copies sold! I freaked the hell out when I found them. And freaked even more when I tested them and realized they all worked!
Yea the very first thing I planned on doing when I got my hands on one of kitschs cases was to do dedicated left and right 1/4 inch jacks just like that. Just haven't taken the trip to RadioShack to get the parts yet. It's nice to know that it can be done without removing the speaker it seems. Which is pretty exciting news to me. And the idea of future models not having a battery compartment at all is pretty epic. That's a load of room we can play with. However I wouldn't convert them all to this idea. There are people that will still want the battery compartment, me being one of them. But I doubt that Matt would do something so crazy. Lol also I'll be adding more gear in this thread shortly. Hopefully doing a few more mods tonight.
I believe JustinThursday sells what you are looking for. He can probably hook you up.
Secret technique! I sell these shells for $50.
Lol alright man. Hopefully I can figure my own process out for it.
Omg I want the one on the right! These are sweet! you have to tell me how the hell you pulled this off.
Uhmmm for the speaker I do believe this guy is right in that it doesn't matter. But I'm not 100% possitive on that. And I currently don't have a gameboy popped open that I can take a look at and test anything on. Just try one way and if it doesn't work just swap the wires. You can do that in about 3 minutes. There's also no need to put the game boy back together to test this...just slide the ribbon cable from the top pcb into its slot on the back pcb and turn the gameboy on with volume turned all the way up. If you hear the classic Nintendo "Paling" sound pure good. If not..swap the wires. If that fails then something is wrong with the speaker or a trace on the board. It's known to happen...just get used to headphones for awhile. Or try to get a spare speaker of someone. Which lots of people have them. Or try to mod in a gameboy color speaker..which is possible.
Sweeeet!! And yes that is normal for nonfinites screens. It's suggested you cut the soldering points down a little that the screen sits on to avoid pressure points. But id say just try it out put the gameboy together, just don't tight te top two screws as tightly as normal at first and see if your backlight looks okay. Turn te gameboy on and check for pressure points if there aren't any proceed to tighten te screws a little more if needed and check again for pressure points. Basically just screw the screws in until you start feeling a little more tension than usual once you fee that tension, check the screen for pressure points. And if it all turns out good congrats on your first backlight mod. It's one of the hardest to do I've seen besides putting a pocket screen in a DMG...but fuck that noise. Post a pic of the end result. Love to see the screen and the gameboy.
Just be very careful with holding it up and you can snip it with really sharp wire cutters and it'll cut through it very easily and safely. You'll be cutting at bit of an angle but you can do it. I do it all te time. Your main concerns will the the ribbon of course but mainly make sure you don't accidentally scratch the traces on the PCB below. You will notice a few tabs on the other side of the board that you can push through that will loosen the plastic frame a little and let you lift it just enough to avoid scratching the traces on the PCB. You'll be fine man just don't be nervous. Being nervous will just make you shakey and cause you fuck up. Now get that shit done man and show it off. Lol
Just bewares that blue has a history of not working to well. Fingers crossed for you man. And write your process down if it works. I'm sure a lot of people would love to know how to do it.
I'm gunna try to help you out here man. Ignore the tutorial about the no cutting part. Look at this very shittily drawn diagram I drew up just for you in about 5 seconds lol.
OBEY the lines!!! Do it!!!
Originally I think they were designed to go in without cuttin at all but hea made a few revisions to them that make the adhesive that helps hold the wires in place come out a little to much. Even so not cutting the plastic frame would result in your wires being pinched at some point which can cause issues in the future. Just save yourself the heart ache and snip snip and you'll be fine.
And here's a picture of my pussy for good luck.
Well...good luck. But you'll be fine seriously. Now get that bitch in there!
@9-heart. You don have to remove the speaker for pitch knobs it's just the easiest way. You can actually fit a small knob on the side around the same area these wheels are positioned or slightly higher. My little "nes boy", as I call it. Has 3 prosound mods, a pitch shift, backlight w/ switch and still kept the internal speaker intact. It's just looking for the right materials as not being lazy with your modding. Unless you're going for the huge giant knob look then yes you have to remove the speaker...or find a new place to put your prosound mod. I however think this design tops them all. This is just pure fucking genius. Now I want to see one with these mods and a half clock mod done on the opposite side of the case. Now that would be almost like having sex for the first time!
I just want to say the them dial for the pitch shifts is freaking genius!
@kitsch you've got to post pics of that case I've got to see it. I don't quite know how to pull it off very well to be honest. I'm not familiar with a paint that would work. This was done using fingernail polish, don't judge lol. I just got telhe idea last night and it's the only thing I had laying around that would spread right. I'm also having issues with air bubbles under the paint..or polish in this case, and I can't figure out how to avoid that. I'll do more research looking into the auto parts thing you mentioned maybe and see what I can find. I'm still looking into the flock stuff and thought its be cool to implement this with flock and maybe a clear paint to make the flock spreadable and plyable. It'll take some time and research but it would be phenomenal and I think the first of its kind done on anything.
@solarbear yes a case can be done. As discussed above its been done. I'm just trying to find out how and make it wildly available. My niche right now is just painting gameboys, PERIOD, but I'd like to find the one thing that makes my cases stand out amongst the rest. So when people see them they can say "yep that's a Vex case" just like we all know what Thretris and Capcomposers cases look like. I don't want to be a copy cat or be concidered some second rate artist because my stuff looks similar to what other people have done in the community. Okay off topic ramble complete. Lol
xmetals maybe
Krylon xmetals exactly. however this case was painted years ago. It's actually isn't bad though..it's just very reflective and catches light easily which makes it look a little odd in photos. However the screen is the focus here lol. What do you guys think of the screen idea? Ignore the gameboy xD
