Besides the update / backup functions for nanoloop 1.6 /2.5, the new version of the nanoloop USB-adaptor offers some additional functionality:

- Sync any nanoloop version and LSDj to MIDI-enabled programs on the PC (LSDj hasn't been tested yet, but I'm optimistic it works).
- Play the Game Boy via MIDI from the PC using mGB.
- MIDI signals from the Game Boy are forwarded to the PC.

It's kind of an Arduinoboy for USB-MIDI, minus the LSDj-specific modes.

I am sorry for that. What can cause the Fs is when you turn off the Game Boy while it is saving the song (which happens when you leave the song editor and takes 1-2 seconds). In the latest version 1.6.3, memory access is indicated by a black square in the upper left.
This can't really be avoided, but it may be possible to modify future versions so that there are no Fs in case of an incomplete save, but the last saved version appears instead (still frustrating, but better than nothing).

Song data shouldn't disappear when just switching banks though.

Currently, there is no such function, but maybe in an update. It would also be possible to prepare a file that resets a bank.

If nanoloop 2.x sounds chippy and thin, use headphones.
Seriously, there is nothing Game Boy specific in nanoloop 2.x's sound, it's a softsynth. Of course it's limited due to the limited CPU power of the GBA and the 8-bit DAC, but compared to the original GB, sound is very different and the range is very broad. The great advantage, especially for mobile composing, is that you can create sounds instead of just loading them from a fixed sample library.

I'm sorry for advertising nanoloop here. I just couldn't leave this "a game boy is always going to sound like a game boy" statement uncommented.

It's a square wave: on/off. In 1.2 it was a triangle, but at the higher frequencies, where the FM sounds like FM rather than an LFO, the horizontal resolution was so low that the result was more or less a square, too. (Like the highest harmonic in the wave form mixer: It's mixed from a sine, but appears as a pure square).

If FM is active (the dot is not on the far left), the pitch envelope / lfo modulates FM depth instead of pitch. Try a slow LFO.

If this is the case he will be sending replacement carts as soon as they are produced and ready.

If this is the case, I'll be sending a replacement immediately. I have put a few units aside for cases like this.

An update will be ready the next days. Thank you for reporting a couple of bugs.

Maybe nice on a tablet, looks like it would be awkward to use on a phone though (from what I see in the video).

The first run is sold out, a new one is in production. This will take a few weeks and an extra 1-2 weeks until the carts are available elsewhere.

If you can download ROMs but no update, the update sector may have been locked by accident. Please contact me at [email protected] for a diagnosis ROM.

Any advice concerning use of the USB adaptor on an OS X machine? Would PC emulation do the trick, or are we out of luck?

I don't know, if other USB peripherals work, then probably yes.

Any ideas about nanoloop 1.6 compatibility with existing backup devices (for instance the Smartboy reader)?

These won't work.

The critical issue is a rather nasty bug that causes data to be wiped after saving a few 100 times, when nanoloop defragments the flash memory. Upon this process, files are copied with a wrong offset so that data appear shifted or just vanish. If you're curious how it looks like, you can force nanoloop to defragment memory by holding START pressed on startup until the sequencer starts.
There is another bug which makes arpeggio unusable.

If you have problems with updating, please contact me.

Received it today. Really nice! Love the short gate.

So we get a USB connector free? That's awesome. Do we need to e-mail you about that or will you send it out anyway?
Thanks!!

You get the adaptor for free if you have version 1.6, I'll send it out along with another e-mail. If you have 1.6, you should have received an e-mail about the bugs and the obligatory update earlier. If you have ordered after 12/16 and version 1.6.1 already, there is no need to update -> no free adaptor.
