Nice vibe, summerish and lot FM bass but sadly it doesn't have "that" Japanese melody thingy I'm looking for.

I was listening to some tracks by Fhána thanks to Comptroller and shit, it is an amazing band, perfect for this thread, listen to this one please guys:

heart this thread! This is a type of sound I have also loved for years and never really been able to put into words, but I totally know what you're getting at: chipmusic, j-pop & anime openings, "happy melancholy", "Japanese melody and chords", yes yes.

A couple of examples I like:

VIDEO1

(I actually covered this on my last EP)

And a more recent one, which I can't stop listening to:

VIDEO2

I really want to try writing more music like this.

OH WOW the second one is perfect!!!!!!!!, and the girl is lovely and sings amazing! Thanks for sharing!

So this type of music don't exist outside of japan after all? A non-japanese band singing in English/Spanish music like this will be a huge international success, I'm pretty sure about that. I don't get why no producer sees this opportunity.

Ever listen to Shibuya-kei, Delek?

I think some of that  might fit your description / what you're looking for.

Yes! I love Shibuya-kei only for that reason, but I've only listening to Nakata Yasutaka works (Perfume, MEG, Kiary Pamyu Pamyu).

Dude, all of those songs are really amazing and are inside the sphere of what I'm looking for but FLIPPER'S GUITAR just blown my mind, that's the style in a guitar and a capella stuff (no electronics) it is a gem absolutelly!, thanks for sharing!

Cool, I think I understand what you're talking about a little more. How about these songs? I think japanese music from the 70s/80s really shows the formation of this style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-xf5Pt1NrA (Edit: whoops, this is the wrong song hmm Most of Yamashita's good shit isn't on youtube. I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6Q8GNy186s works a little better tho, mainly the chorus)

THE FIRST ONE!! THAT CHORUS OMG LOVELY! YEAH! heart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRNobgLHRzA (Again, there're better examples from Matsushita but none are on youtube)

Those are more calmed down and chilled out, but them have the anime style 100% thanks a lot! The previous one, SUNSHINE is more close than this ones but we are starting to point our cannons precisely very fast! Thanks.

Also, from what I've seen, that sort of feel has kind of become a trend in recent japanese & western electronic music, and I definitely think it stems from electronic music artists that grew up listening to japanese video game & anime music. Some examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaIoTmn29Gc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHkZPGgDb-U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbD_AJAgp8I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftSUchAdVTE (I think this one gives more of a gospel vibe harmonically, but the fast, almost cutesy instrumentation sort of pushes into the territory we're looking for)

OHHH GODDD I CAN'T BELIEVE Flight Facilities - Stand Still feat. Micky Green EXACTLY IN THE CENTER OF THE SPOT, HOLE IN ONE! THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS!

Fortune Howl - "Paws" (bo en Remix) is awesome too but with more beat, breaks and romantic background and less melody.

[Future] Pa's Lam System - I'm Coming (Avec Avec Remix) YESSS ONCE AGAIN!! That feeling one more time, it is a mix of japanese jazzy chords progressions with a melody going from sad and happy all the time, I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chance The Rapper - Good Ass Intro (feat. BJ The Chicago Kid, Lili K., Kiara Lanier): The chords are there, but the rap and the vocals mess up everything, sorry but this one is going in the wrong direction.

AMAZING, 8bits and Japanese melody and chords feeling, love it!

Yess! We are getting so close so fast!
Cooshinator, this three songs you have posted are exactly what I'm looking for!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXs0VuDWp7I

Imaginary, wow my friend, you have just the nail. All of those tracks have that feeling that I'm so desesperate to find!
YMO!!!, that band have many many tracks with this soul!!

The thing is, there is no name for this kind of music? This can't be.

Guys, what do you think about this song? It is from my country Argentina and since I've listened in 2006 it stucked in my head like "this have many J-pop/anime influences"

I have found more examples in soundcloud of what I'm looking for:
https://soundcloud.com/t4n3/namachuukei … et-scc-ver
https://soundcloud.com/sarasaneia/hydli … of-freedom

Also this tunes by this J-Pop bands (all compositions by Nakata Yasutaka):

Hmmm, no.

It's been a while since I've seen a question about Japanese pop harmony come through reddit's music theory sub and it's probably because I keep giving the same reply. Your question isn't exactly the same, but my answer to it is similar.

As for harmony, Japanese harmony question is that the harmony in J-pop used to be present in American (and rest of world) pop too, but gradually fell out of favor, coming to a head around the time of yacht rock and lasting a little longer in R&B than in rock.

Here are some songs that are as melodically and harmonically fluid as the songs you shared, hopefully these are playable in your country, and yes, they're intentionally old and chronologically ordered as best I could:

Very good information, I think you know a lot about music, sadly, the only song that is close to what I'm describing is the one by Stevie Wonder.
The others are very far from the japanese happy happy melancholic style.

I totally love this song of Naruto !

From 0:06 to 0:32 this song is EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

The other ones are close but outside of the spot.

I think we will enclose this style from post to post! Thank guys you're awesome. heart

Hi there!, I need to share with you guys this strange feeling that I have since I was a kid: The soul of the music that I love can only be found on certain Chipmusic and certain Japanese Pop and anime openings/endings.

You will say WTF? But the thing is that it doesn't matter what the instruments are, I'm not talking here about sound techniques or synthesizers; the soul and the melodies used in various compositions of this two worlds is really really similar, I know that Japan is a HUGE influence in the games/OSTs world but this style "should" be a general result of a simple feeling, not a japan only conclusion.

I have tried all my life to search for alternative sources for this kind music patterns in another places without any type of success.
But, what's the special thing in those tracks? I could define the feeling very vaguely with:
Happy melancholy
The sun starts to shine after a rainy day
Young and innocent first love

Please see and try to understand how that feelings are related with each other: It is a crash between a good moment and a bad moment resulting in HOPE and faith.
I'm pretty sure that this feeling doesn't have a NAME so far, it is actually an independent feeling and this is why it is so difficult to search for this type of melodies and chords, the mix between happiness, sadness and hope is a new feeling that deserves his own name.

I'm just crazy? Please tell me if so.
I really need some help trying to identify this style (if it actually exists) and also to find songs from other sources.
