What did you put on?

I'm 90% sure it was Arcadecoma.

Another one, I showed my dad a cover of "yoshimi battles the pink robots pt. 2" someone did on 8bc because he is a big Flaming Lips fan and I explained what the whole chiptune thing was/meant and his response was "sounds dumb".

Does anyone know by chance who did that cover though? it was rad and I don't have it on my computer anymore.

haha well it was when I was first getting into chiptune, and the first thing I ever showed her was arcadecoma, so every day I would play new stuff I downloaded that day and would be like "I promise this one is dope", and after about a week of that I showed her Bit Shifter's cover of "the world has turned and left me here" and Unicorn Dream Attack's "Jamie" and she started to appreciate. She likes a bunch of it now (not the simpler 1 gameboy stuff so much), so it's all good.

Point being, Bit Shifter and UDA bring people closer together.

10,000,000 out of 10.

edit: trying not to hide is like the best song I've ever heard.

Overhealed is my favorite.

i myself just put in somthing random then tweak it untill i like it

I have a general idea of what would flow together and usually play the melodies out on my keyboard a bit before drawing them in or recording them, but after that some tweaking usually occurs. Maybe he means something like that, and I don't think that's so wrong. If he means genuinely just clicking random notes in and then tweaking that is a little strange, but who's to say it's a wrong way of making music? If you're gonna try and tell me you don't just fuck around on a keyboard and evolve some general fuckery into a melody, you are a liar, or don't have a keyboard, but you get the point.

My album took about 1 month to make, and it could have been done in like 2 weeks if I worked on songs every day.

edit: take note I use FL and chipsounds, not real hardware.

When I make original songs it's just a flow from boredom and what I would want to listen to (usually boredom though), and I usually hate it after listening for hours while making it. Some songs I have done and liked and still listen to and am like "damn das good", and other times I'm like "no wonder no one likes my music". I do a lot of covers just because I'm like "I like this song, but I'd like it even more as chiptune". I listen to those a bunch for sure and never get sick like "oh I made this, I fucking hate it" because I didn't make anything, I just recreated someone else's song. I just pretend they made their own song that way, and I'm all good. Being active on here and listening to lots of your guys' music inspires me to do better (specifically Downstate, seriously he's the shit) and to get into new methods of making music and making more authentic and original sounding music.

edit: but I genuinely think lots of my shit is terrible, but I think that stems more from a low self-esteem. It really means a lot when some of you dudes who I listen to daily comment on a song I did or whatever. Feel free to tell me I suck though, because I'm sick of sending my girlfriend my songs and she says "it's good" but is just probably being nice.

If Justin timberlake used chiptune, I would genuinely be okay with it. jt4lyfe.

It's okay your point still stands, I won't deny it haha.

I also think that it's really silly and straight-up reactionary for people here to be alarmists meanwhile the scene covers plenty of popular artists' music. A Beastie Boys tribute compilation thread surfaced within minutes of the announcement of MCA's death and dozens lined up to be a part of it.

I have been thinking this way too, there are people mad because dubstep got mainstream, but there's chipstep. there have been people who were mad when hardcore/metal got ruined by scene kids, and there's "nintendocore". If anything we are the ones invading popular music. We should roll with it and make the mainstream our bitch.

Also for the record, the real beastie boys tribute I've been getting together was pitched a few weeks after he died, but there was a "MCA is dead" thread before then.

Also also for the record, I can really see Katy Perry or Gaga doing a chip song because of what Bright Primate is doing. What a trendsetter/boss.

Or they'd buy FL and use 3xOSC to make cool basic waves.

I think they'd at least take the extra half step to download toad and peach.

edit so i dont have to double post: but yeah if chip were "mainstream" obviously a bunch of douchy kids would kind of ruin it, they're already moving in through dubstep now that so many producers are like "LOL this sounds like a videogame because it's a square wave! so much GRIME!!!!" but I think even if there was a big chip explosion it would be completely separate from the current chip scene. It would probably piss lots of us off that everyone would be like "oh fuck this new Skrillex joint is dope! he used the mario coin sound effect! LOL nostalgia to the max!" and never listen to any real chip, but at the same time it will be preserving the integrity of real stuff. On a plus side, if real chip got popular, we would be rolling in the dough, and bitches, and liquor, and weed, and all drive fast sports cars..... man i hope chipmusic sells out.

edit #2: Saskrotch I'm gonna add you on facebook, even though your mean comments sometimes make me anxious, but you are from my home state and I love your music. Please don't make me cry and cut myself to sleep.

I just listened to both songs. the sounds are just the same sounds producers have been using for over 20 years on pop music. these are the basic "SQUARE BASS" and "SUPER SAW" type sounds that come stock on pretty much every synth plug in ever.

I also just scrolled Nadia's tumblr. I think I have cancer now.

I don't mean to be that jaded jerk here, but pop stars using basic waveforms in their songs is definitely NOT co-opting chiptune. I'm pretty sure the producers in question don't even really have any clue what "chiptune" is; the sounds sound cool and so they're going to use it. Definition arguments aside (let's REALLY not get into this guys), I don't think chiptune as a form is co-optable, and chiptune as an aesthetic is such a slippery slope that anyone using basic waveforms could be called "chiptune."

I think the connection to the use of dubstep in music is questionable. Dubstep is foremost a form, secondly an aesthetic. That's why you can have stuff like Burial coexisting in the same genre space as Skrillex; the aesthetics are completely different, but the form is the same. I don't think that's the case with chiptune -- in fact, it could be argued that the form is so connected to the aesthetic that an artist can't make a song with chiptune in it; they have to make a CHIPTUNE SONG. And yes, there's a difference.

If anything, the use of these basic waveforms in pop music is less CHIPTUNE BECOMING MAINSTREAM and more producers running out of ideas for weird-ass sounds to put in their pop music. We had the funk-ass instrumentals with Timbaland, and we had the hyper-produced euro-pop with David Guetta (and like every K-Pop song in existence (it's so good omg)), and now producers are getting back to their roots, except we had about 10-20 years of context to cover for the fact that yes, these producers didn't even put any fundamentals in their waveform, shut up, it's music. Everyone's already singing about the end of the world and the collapse of civilization -- we might as well collapse the resolutions of waveforms with it.

I did a bunch of covers over the past few months for fun, and compiled them in an album. Some of you will probably hate it, but whatever it was fun making them. Some covers that I haven't posted on here in the music section are Ratatat, Bjork, and a better version of my Aphex Twin cover. Check it out, it's free obviously.
