LB: I fixed those two. You can always use the report button, though. That way the report reaches staff faster.

It's a pretty simple system, but if you knew, the magic would be ruined.

I think nitro2k01 mentioned on his website something about the pads for the LCD data potentially being used for video output, and this confirms that.

Let me clarify this. Those six pins are used for 3*gnd, the two pixel bits and a clock. This clock would be triggered every pixel, and silent during the blanking periods. I had a theory you could recover the full video stream from just those three signals. And I thought those three hole were there to attach a pin header to do just that.

However, this was proven wrong. On the Wideboy handheld piece, those holes are marked as capacitors, although they're unpopulated. And it's clear that the system displayed in this thread in working on a stock DMG, so how the thing is connected is an after thought. They simply connected the ribbon cable wires where they best could.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not extremely awesome. Everything else is just extremely awful.

I hate every time I see a cable and think it's a 'nana, when it's in fact a stackable 3.5 mm.

Interesting. So basically a portable memory system. I wonder if there's a whole bunch of these lying around in a warehouse somewhere because nobody wanted them. These could potentially be used for NL/LSDj backup. Did you get a cartridge with it? Without one, I'm fairly certain this thing is useless. Could you open a cartridge and look for flash chips? They would typically have a chip number like 29f010 or something like that. Basically interested in the size. Also interested in a copy of that game for reverse engineering to see how the protocol works.

Great, then it should work out of the box. Only the save function would need to be rewritten.

Woah, hang on a sec.  Are you guys saying that the sweet NL setup I've just ordered may soon also allow me to fully use mgb?  Am I reading that right?  yikes

EDIT:  As in without arduino la-dee-da business?

The assertion is that mGB would run on an NL cartridge.
The MIDI part would still require an Arduino, or speculatively the NL MIDI adapter.

Interesting idea, to misuse MIDI as the generic simple data transfer protocol that USB is missing. I should have started with that, would probably have saved me a lot of work.

I wouldn't call it MISuse, as Sysex was made specifically for things like these. Also, you might want to include a mode that allows you to load code into RAM and execute it. That would allow for extra fun, and maybe even upgrades, assuming the ROM flash chip has /wr connected straight to the /wr of the GB bus. If you need any help, say asm code, I'm there.

Yes. Allthough it's the same hardware, the MIDI-version will have a different sotware. It's not possible and I think also not allowed to have an USB device with multiple software versions that somehow switches between both.

Unfortunately, the MIDI-version is not yet finished.

Replying here because I want to avoid speaking about serious stuff in the other place, if I can.

If you get MIDI working, you might have it as a goal to use only MIDI. I.e. the backup process might happen through MIDI sysex. This would perhaps make it easier to make software for backing up for various platforms.

Just hi-jacking this thread. Is the USB adapter available in a MIDI sync rendition? If so, any chances of a firmware rewrite which will enable it to output raw MIDI data for use with e g mGB? I think that would be a quite sellable product...

Nice colors. tt's nice how the color of the buttons matches the color of the screen. It's also nice how the colors of the thing matches the colors of chipmusic.org.

Sorry for being a grammar nazi, but for the love of ghawd, stop saying "chiptuning"! "Tuning" has never been synonymous with "making a tune". You never see people ask for "a good music program for trance tuning" for example.

Now I'm kind of curious. Are there any preserved examples of pre-computer Hubbard music?
