Gus and Elliot explore the more obscure edges of electronic music, bringing listeners mental breakcore, strangely life-affirming ambient electronics and a mix of anything in between.

Me and Elliot (Promoter of Extreme Rinse Only, a rave night in London which has staged artists like weyheyhey!! and Amen-Tal and soon to host Pulselooper I believe!) are producing a weekly radio show for Goldsmiths' radio station, Wired. The remit's fairly broad, but from the very first show there'll be tons of VGM, chipmusic, related stuff (anything from Ceephax to My Little Airport) and music that'll appeal to anyone familiar with more leftfield electronica (early Warp/Rephlex/Skam/Planet Mu/the list is virtually endless...).

We also have 15 minute guest live slots every week. This week we'll have the Parliamentalist, and anyone who wants to play a future show is welcome to message me here or at stevenosurname [at] gmail [dot] com. Likewise, you have music you want us to play, show us! We're pretty open minded.

It's every Friday at 7PM. You can listen here and all previous shows will be uploaded...somewhere!

Chalices of the Past's WIZARDZZZ is wicked. He might have contributed to this thread but I'm quite amazed that no-one's shifted the spotlight onto Matt Nida's stuff. Language Barrier is one of the most strangely emotional songs I've heard in this scene. Truly amazing.

Ironically, my browser kept freezing at the point where Mario gets stuck (just a YT problem, saw it all in the end). I loved it, everything from the close-ups of the Dendy to the anecdote about Pepsi in Russia made it worth watching.

doesn't seem like a lot of known european guys are in this at all.

I think that's fair to say at the moment, but at risk of sounding ridiculously defensive they're still travelling and getting footage so I'd imagine that by the time it's finished there'll be a good cross section of European musicians. They're also open to suggestions...

I did a quick search for this before posting but turned up no results - which is surprising, since everyone in the European chipmusic scene is very excited about this! Here's what the creators have to say:

The purpose of this documentary is to spread the existence of a different musical universe, based on the use of computers and consoles of the 8bits age among the general public. This will be done from a European perspective focus on multiculturalism and youth associations.

People from all over Europe have been interviewed already, with tons of gig footage and recordings to go along with them...all in all, both a veritable treat for hardened chipmusic fanatics and an excellent introductions to it all!

Watch the trailer.

I have a CX5MII (the one with slightly improved MIDI support etc)...I love using it as an old school FM synth (I also have a DX7, but fuck it I can't deny that I enjoy editing patches on a TV screen), for backing tracks or little parts in songs. Since I never really planned to use it as a standalone music station (and I luckily got it cheap) I have to say that Yamaha's music sequencer software is rather archaic though.

If you want a machine that you can make complete FM chiptunes with, then the Yamaha CX5M - with the software available - is not the best option. I've heard some amazing tracks made with the Moonsound cart Linde mentions. If you want some accessible FM synth operation (potentially MIDI controllable with later models), then a CX5M with the voicing cartridge is great fun...but this is a chipmusic forum, so why would anyone want that?

Ah ha! Well I've enjoyed it a lot anyhow!

Would be nice with more C64-stuff in that vein.

My thoughts exactly. A few people in chipmusic have come close (no idea what platform it was composed on but this Micromusic tune by Ascii Disco is similar), but it's such a simple sound to replicate, especially when certain Dopplereffekt/Japanese Telecom/etc tracks are packed with speech synthesis and squarewaves anyway!

I'm amazed you haven't run out of song titles for songs. There is some mad shit going on down here, fuck yeah baby. There's definitely a vague Dopplereffekt (at their more abstract) vibe to this too, which is ace.
