This is very exciting. I don't think I've ever heard Unicorn Dream Attack's pure Gameboy stuff.

Don't be a know-it-all, talking about things that you weren't around to be a part of unless you've done a lot of really deep and heavy research.

In order of importance:

1) Make music, and make sure each new track is better than the last, otherwise keep it in your sketch folder.
2) Don't support or encourage bad music. People don't learn from praise, they learn from scraped knees and bruised egos.
3) Support good music any way you can. Post about good music on your Facebook page, buy albums you really like.
4) Email the artists you like. Every single artist in the world is an attention whore and they all want to be complimented. Attention motivates them into producing more of the stuff you like.

Thank you for posting this. I really needed it.

No im talking about technical complexity. You make it sound like amateur musical composition was indicative of a certain era in chipmusic's history, when dudes have been kicking butt on all levels for a looooong time.

Oh, I see. My bad. I apologize for that. That wasn't what I meant by exploratory. And thank you for the correction. I don't know what I was thinking... there's always plenty of varieties of all kinds of stuff no matter what year it is.

I'm sorry, my mind draws weird correlations between things all the time...

Edit: ugh... I should have just let this pass... i feel all slimy now...

I don't quite see where you're getting that from...

Really? I guess I haven't listened to frostbyte that much. But that's where my mind went when I heard it. It's very sparse, admittedly, but it feels like the thing he released before codec(x?) stripped down.

2007-ish exploratory feel

Um there were good chiptunes before 2007. Even some after!

Wasn't really talking about the goodness or badness of the music. But you probably already knew that? A blues kid can imitate Robert Johnson without sounding as good as him.

Hmm. It is not without appeal. *It kind of has that pre 2007-ish exploratory feel to it (from what little I've heard of that era, anyway). It has some nice simple sounds. At times too simple, though. Of course, simple sounds are great if you have strong compelling melodies.

Some of the sections seem too long and repetitive, though. Mood changes and alternate chord progressions are welcome. Umm... are you looking for CC? cuz I can give it more in depth if you like.

Anyway, it's bouncy and happy, which is not a bad thing. I like the childish melody in track two. Reminds me of ice cream and 90's cellphone toys.

Got a little frostbyte influence on that last track, eh?

Edit: I just realized you used that same fourxfour beat throughout. Eh...

*blarney in underline since I can't strike-through

If the wav instrument is playing a solo all by itself you could always fiddle with the volume pot if you are post-pot-pro-sounded? derp

There's already a thread for this but your topic title makes a lot more sense.

Edit: My non-chip stuff is largely unreleased. I did the ost for a game called Vista Quest and it's sequel Vista Quest 2 at www.suitgames.com in .mid format. That's about all I have to show for myself musically. I don't really separate my various musical styles from each other. My soundcloud is indiscriminate.

It's useful to build relationships within a community of people, and you may eventually make a connection with somebody better than you at what you do who will naturally become a mentor to you.

If you wanna do the crime, you gotta do the time.

Edit: As far as balanced constructive criticism... chipmusic.org seems to be a pretty good place for that.

why doesn't anamanaguchi come here anymore? i saw them just a couple minutes ago on 4chan answering questions then moot showed up and they stopped allowing reply's so i couldn't ask them there

They just posted on here today, didn't they? likeluke is the anamanaguchi representative around here.

I alwys hear people saying they can't find an 1/8" jack with an internal switch that cuts off the speaker.

Couldn't they just rip one out of an old stereo or something?

This is a really old thread.

You can be lighthearted and still make serious music that sounds good, but when you make lighthearted music with no direction and randomly you start heading down a dangerous path to ant1hood.

What are you talking about ant1hood is a great place to be. I agree that it is a dangerous path to travel, though.

Also, the F command is additive, so if you have a table that goes F05 F05, the second F05 plus the first will land you at F0A. Better to use mostly F01 commands if you want to stay in the current synth.

Personally, I usually just use the E command and stretch it out longer if I want a longer decay. It usually works out okay, imo, since there are a lot of other sounds to mask the simplicity.

Sometimes I'll use the Synth screen and simply set the VOL setting high on the top and low on the bottom, and reverse that for swells and ignore the clicking. *shrug* Actually, I have one song in which I intentionally invoke clicks in the intro to emulate a record player to make the listener accustomed to it so they don't stand out during the rest of the song. I hope it works... tongue

Ugh... that warez productions thing again? Well, at least you made it go with the music this time, so that's a big improvement. The music itself is really cool. Actually, since the warez productions does go with the music, it doesn't really bother me at all.

DotMatrix Stalking kind of vaguely sounds like a Super Mario RPG mash-up.

I dunno. It just has that little "something" that keeps me interested. Every time I think I'm going to get bored, it brings me back. I guess we could call it the VGM effect, since the songs are so short.

Most of the tracks definitely need to be looped over again, imo  Dread and Oak Forest I think are fine as they are, though the ending of Oak Forest has a lot of potential for more material.

This is very cool, unique and interesting, and too short.
