Though I think it's not 100% what you're looking for, I hope you check it out and enjoy it!

I did enjoy it, lots of nice syncopation going on there too.

I am not against it, but if you can find a hand-made 8-bit cover done in a tracker vs a converted deal, the authentic one is always gonna blow it away. There are some awesome Daft Punk covers out there. I have found some cheapish Smiths and Radiohead ones that I still listen to despite their lack of 'authenticity'...

Interesting.

I am working on the music for an Xbox game, first chip style commission i've picked up for a non-iOS or PC platform aside from a Nintendo DS game that probably will never be released. Also, weirdly, a SNES style soundtrack for a card game adaptation to iOS.

I like the Leeni and the Lo Fi X Hedgland is interesting too!

Some parts of Azuria Sky's work are pretty close to what you're asking for.

it does have a little bit of that feel, for sure.

Her other stuff is all just acoustic music, reminds me of marzipan from homestar runner, but this remix has a kind of retro sound that would be amazing for a chip album with some female vocals.

sounds like chip Gregory and the Hawk...

I would buy a t-shirt of the album cover, good stuff. I like the unexpected melodic moments...

Always interesting to see an objective view of chip from someone not immersed in the scene. Well written too.

All good to know, just moved to Chicago

Lovers of all-things retro in Chicago, you should check out

Galloping Ghost - $15 all you can play authentic classic arcade
Wormhole Coffee - Everything in your room from 1985 blended with a coffee shop, tube tvs with nintendos and good coffee

I like the concept, it is not a 100% console based program (you can see that the movement is actually very fluid, without respecting the letter's grid), but it is really addictive. Congrats!

PS: The .jar's size is too big (50mb), I opened the .jar and it is clear that you are using .wav files for the music, eating 90% of the game's size just for that. Please consider using a module format or mp3 at least. Continue the good work! smile

Thanks for trying it out! Yeah, I was not the programmer but he did a great job of making the movement and fluidity really feel like metroid. The way everything moves makes you feel like its the NES. At first i thought, 'why is it text?' when he pitched it, but its sort of like double-nostalgic, its like metroid goodness + ANSI games i used to play on DOS. it was really just a matter of making a game in such a short time and not having an artist on board!

As for the size, Ill mention that to the dev. I think I gave him everything in mp3 for the most part. i know theres some kind of platformer library he used to build it, maybe that takes up some size...
