Hi Jeff,

Yes, there is an audio output on that DIN but I think the OP was asking if there was an actual audio jack on the C64 itself and even though there is an RCA RF port which looks like you may be able to take an RCA to 1/4 inch adapter, I don't think that it would put audio into a mixer, although I have not tried this. The splicing you mentioned is a good way to do it depending on the setup. I find that since fitting an audio jack (or two) to my C64 it adds a lot of convenience for me personally, as I use the video out port with a scart cable to send both video and audio to my TV whilst I can just take 1/4 inch  audio cables straight to my mixer. For the sake of a fiver the cable I added a link to would be a quick, cheap and easy way to do what the OP is after, without the need for any soldering and modifying, and would work with or without a TV.

Alex.

Hi,

I'm afraid the C64 doesn't have an audio out jack, it has either a 5 or 8 pin DIN (depending on the model) which puts out various signals for audio and video, and it has an RF out for TV and audio signal. You could get a modified cable that can split the audio and video. I recommend the RetroComputerShack eBay shop and one of these;

You could use this with or without the TV as you can play cynthcart without a screen.

The alternative would be to add an audio out jack to the back of your C64 like I have done with mine. I have two and another SID installed. I prefer this method as it's neater. It's not too tricky if you can do some basic soldering and the parts only cost a couple of quid.

White PIL's go for quite a bit as they are rare, I've been after one for some time but wouldn't be cheeky and offer you a pittance for the shells, which could easily have the innards from two standard gameboys stuck in them and sold on for a profit. I would recommend that you do just that, if you can find the time, sell the cartridges either separately or as a job lot and sell all the cases and hardware together on ebay as a 'gameboy modders starter set' or something.

I take it you're in the US as I can see a dollar sticker on one of the backs?

It sounds like you've been unlucky, I've bought tens of good gameboys on eBay cheap.

Nice! Yeah would probably be expensive to get shipped to the states. Thanks though. Do you have anything in particular you're watching out for to avoid the crap ones? Two of the three I've gotten developed horizontal lines after I've gotten them. The one i'm using now is pink and only has one line so it's more annoying but still.

I just look out for listings that say they have no dead pixels or have pictures of the screen on with a game running. You might even be able to pick up a spares and repairs one even cheaper that won't switch on (usually corroded terminals) or one with a battered case, as you already have a case or two. You can't guarantee that they have good screens but at least they'll be cheap and you'd have a few spare components to cover you for any modding mishaps wink.

I certainly wouldn't want to deter you from buying one from nonelectronics or any other site (I've used many of them myself) but I just thought I'd share my eBay experiences.

Hi baudtack. Are you in the UK?

Hi all,

I'm Alex and I live near Manchester in the UK.  I've been viewing the forums for some time now whilst modifying a commodore 64 and Gameboys for chipmusic. I've found several useful threads that have helped me prosound and backlight a couple of DMG's and I've managed to sid2sid a 1983 breadbin commodore 64 (one of the ones 8bitventures says is unsupported due to the SID location).

I've become addicted to modding gameboys, two weeks in and I'm on my fourth, and I'm going to continue picking up broken units to restore and chiptunify. Hopefully I'll be able to sell some of these as there are probably people on these forums who like to make and play music but don't want to open up and possibly destroy their systems.

I will also be writing up how I managed to mod the commodore 64 for use with mssiah as I had to do a few thing to the REV B unit that I couldn't find on the internet (yes, think for myself!) in order to keep the VIC chip as shielded as possible whilst fitting the the sid2sid board.

I'll be reading all the stickies and hopefully not stepping on anybody's toes.

Looking forward to chatting with some of you.

Alex.
