Not really. Optos are not necessary, but only suggested. They are nothing more than a small fuse-type of device in between the sender and receiver in case the sender is bunk. Yes, it would be stupid to go without in commercial device, but we can assume FoM isn't going to hook up his arduino to anything other than his MIDI keyboard and/or his PC. Besides, I mentioned it only for testing purposes.
Let us know how it goes, with photos!
Never mind. I didn't see the second page.
If you trust the wiring of pin 4 and 5 of your midi keyabord, you can skip the opto altogether and connect the keyboard to the arduino.
What opto are you using?
I have gameboy crap and a commodore+cynthcart bundle and an atari+synthcart bundle, but I really wanted to try and get these state-side due to shipping expenses.
Yeah, 3/4 of my GGs have dead caps. As for the cable, 10 is not bad, but its certainly not the best. Lol
Speaking of which, its only a matter of time until 3 of every 4 gameboys need new caps.
bump. I am looking for a Master System, or zxSpectrum. At the moment I mostly have trades to offer. Talk to me.
This is a great idea. I am very exited about composing on the gg.
However the sync cables seem to be so rare and dang expensive!
Yeah, once a software exists I think we could propose a solution/replacement. I feel like the port itself could be pulled and replaced by a DB9, as illustradted here:

lerAdaptor
I mean, the GG has four programmable sound channels, copious amounts of internal space for mods and already has a mod for video output. Plus, its in freaking color with a pre-existing backlight!
This will...only work when the gambeoy itself is looking to read buttons though. If you want to be able to read presses at any time, I cannot help you. To be honest, the gameboy may be looking for a button press a million times a second, so the compromise is minimal at best.
Easy, read the data sheet. lol
http://www.devrs.com/gb/files/gbspec.txt
CTRL+F "I/O Registers"
and read up on how the GB reads button presses and then check the schemataic:

I suggest connecting P10 - P15 to digital inputs. Enable pull ups on your P10-P13 inputs. Conventional code will
1. activate P14,
2. read P10 - P13
3. deactivate P14
4. activate P15
2. read P10 - P13
Connect P14 and P15 to interrupts and when one goes low, read P10-P13. The datasheet will tell you how to know which button is pressed.
I don't think anyone has stripped it, but the LEDs are actually useful beyond mode-designation. They will flash with MIDI activity on each channel.
How I picked my name was I figured Deadmau5 was popular and he was "Adjective/Animal" so....
Its a pretty basic variable in the equations; the name of an animal.
I made the mistake of not choosing an animal, but I suppose I associate with wolves. Wolf girls to be more specific, but I am not a wolf girl. Heh...
I chose my name 10 years ago at the age of 14 when I started playing NeoPets. Look me up... or bite me.
sexy. Gonna grab one of the 100. Are they individually numbered?
EDIT: I retract my vote for Genesis/Megadrive and vote for SNES. I will even offer my services for a physical release. Since it too is sample based, it should be a no brainer.
