Electric guitar with distortion, if I remember well. It sounds awesome : D
I have to try out ukulele. Its lack of bass could be an advantage...

Is there any tutorial out there to this?

Hey that's me!

For that song the guitar was actually clean and recorded through a DI box. The compression, EQ, and 4-bit sample quality make it sound kind of distorted, haha.

This song had a piano kit in it: http://roboctopus.bandcamp.com/track/your-stars-at-dawn

Piano definitely is much easier to work with than guitar. A sound with more definition works better, in my experience. Bass sounds don't work very well, and highs don't fare very well. In my experience you're best sticking to mid-range sounds. It helps to EQ out some of the bass to make the sound clearer. EQing out some of the highs seems to help reduce that DMG-bit-crush-hiss sound.

The sound is definitely lo-fi, but I think it has its own charm.  I'm actually working on some new tracks that heavily use this idea, haha. I was literally about to make a kit of e-piano chords! ^_^

The best thing to do is just experiment with EQ/Compression and different instruments. It's a bit of trial-and-error but you might find a sound you like!

Edit: for preparing and loading samples into an LSDJ ROM, I originally used little-scale's tutorial. I used Audacity though.

This gives me some nice ideas to work with! Love that track with the piano. smile

Studied film. At the moment working for an HR company, saving up to move and keep studying film. (Specifically, documentary film)

If it's a gba it doesn't have lighting.

I know this, what I was trying to explain was that there is a little flicker, as if the screen had turned on, but nothing shows.
Language barrier, my friend. My mistake... lol. smile

EDIT: Cleared up the original post to avoid confusion. :3

Aaaaand. No sound from headphones.

I think I'm gonna have to open it up and gut it.

It's GBA. Is backlight the right word? Haha. The screen turns on but nothing shows, is an easier way to put it. You see something happening, but stays white. (I'm thinking in spanish, my bad)

But speaker also being fried sounds like a probable thing, let me look for headphones.

Check out your local flea markets/used stuff stores, guys.  I just found a Game Boy Color, a Game Boy advance AND a GB Camera all for $10. Ever found good stuffs like that??

Anyways, I was off to do some modding! When suddenly...

The Advance turns on, and everything seems to be in working order. Except nothing shows up on screen.
No matter what cartridge I load, the screen flickers on but nothing shows. I also can't hear music or anything... So, is it fried?

I've tried to search for more info, but my internet's acting up and apparently I need to go back to Google school because the only info I find is for people who still hear the music/effects playing. So, If music plays it's the screen that's dead... But what if no screen and no sound? (It's not the SP Advance, btw... It's the big one.)

Meh, at least the Color/Camera work! I'll upload pics in a second.

EDIT: To clear up mistake.

Oh, wow... That is... strange hmm
Do you have the chance to borrow someone's LSDJ to see how the DMG reacts to that one??

I think that's as far as I can help sad I hope you can fix that.

Hmm sounds like the EMS64 is the thing. Maybe the internal battery of the cartridge?

but none of them are at all interested in trying to make it.

You know, maybe that's not such a horrible thing. You could be known as "that amiga/gameboy/nes/c64/whatever you use guy/girl" and use that to your advantage. Plus, not everyone who likes chipmusic has to make it (though it seems like a disproportionately large number of people who are really into it also produce it, lol). It's okay for fans to just be fans. If you write awesome stuff that touches the hearts of your listeners and is relevant to their personal experience then you will inspire more people to want to write it. They're not going start writing chipmusic just because it exists as a thing and you say "hey this is a thing".

^ This guy. This guy got it right.

I can't believe , reading through this thread, that I found someone else from Puerto Rico. So that brings the grand total of chipmusicians in this island (that i know of) up to 4.

One moved out, the guy who posted here, a friend who's just starting , and me.

I believe that, like with every scene, if there's no space for you, then you have to create it. So that is the plan. The goal is to have something moving, perhaps even a free compilation EP for download by Christmastime.

Guys, should I get a blank cart and flash it with LSDJ or should I find an actual LSDJ cart on ebay?

buy a 64mb EMS or drag n derp, and but LSDJ o it, if you want LSDJ that is. If you're looking for portability then you could just as easily get piggy on a psp/other system that supports it.

^ This. Exactly what I did. No complaints.

My setup for GLEETCH LONDON at the Moustache Bar in London tonight!! Notable gear: nitro2k01's GB Amen masher, modified (housed it in a box and added power starve circuitbend for pitch control) Loud Objects circuit, second kind of dumb fake DIY Loud Object made with an Arduino, (it uses the code that makes different random-ish beats, i managed to vaguely change some numbers to make it a bit more hardcore sounding but it's a total bodge and i couldn't figure out how to make it mono, or digitally switch between channels, so it has a physical left/right switch on the output (^u^;)> which so stupid.), mostly going thru the good old Gieskes DEP2a. Might add a bass synth pedal in there somewhere for extra possibilities re: making people feel like they're listening to some dance music of some strange sort, and not just a harsh noise artist inexplicably booked at midnight at the trendiest bar in dalston big_smile

Full info here if anyone feels like coming to hear this in action. Free entry! ^__^

All those pedals remind me of how much I'm aching to hook up my DMG to my guitar's pedalboard. (Whammy, Delays, Phaser, fuzz, OD and Ring modulator) i'm expecting the Ring mod to completely obliterate eardrums.

Anyway, all this to say that I love this setup!!

One thing that's worked for me throughout the years as a musician is to listen to as many different types of music as you can. Get soaked in everything from chiptune, indie rock, to krautrock, to hip hop, etc...

Broaden your spectrum and really listen to the way the songs are composed. The way the notes flow, and how they progress.

Just keep at it man, I've been there, but just start with a general idea, and build on it. :3

Also, get other people to listen to your stuff and give you their input, I've found out that sometimes I think the work I've produced is crap, while other people see otherwise. We are our worst critics.

Have fun!
