Delek's response (with that incomprehensible Magmax theme!) to my thread on the most underrated game themes got me thinking of another fun topic and possible article subject, the most baffling video game music. I'm not talking "songs that suck" I'm talking songs that provoke a weird emotional response that doesn't fit the game or just confuses your ears, my top nominees are:

Metroid - Norfair

I'm just Not sure how this song makes me feel, its kind of soothing, but has those weird unsettling pauses. It is supposed to be suspenseful or calming? It makes me picture a lifeless puppet dangling in the wind..

Return of Samus – Chozo Ruins

I love the surface music in RoS but this song is like the theme song for a bi-polar, indecisive super hero..it's like the perfect musical expression of an awkward moment that goes on too long, oh but then gets really dangerous and intense...someone wrote on youtube that it's like something stalking you...I sorta get that, but not the first part of it, which just sounds like a game over jingle...

MagMax

It's just...mind blowing...I can't even decide what to think of it...

Donkey Kong Country – Jungle Groove

Two great songs juxtaposed in such a weird way...could they not decide if they wanted the game to start off somber and epic or silly and fun? Either one would have been great, but why slam them together like this?

Anyways just my opinions, am I missing some? Thoughts on these ones?

Just full disclosure, I may turn this into an article on my blog. Just so everyone knows, I'm just doing these articles for fun and I appreciate anyone's input. I'm not making any profit or trying to mine the forums for good stuff..

The theme song from Martin Walker's "Rupert and the Toymaker's Party" is an excellent, atmospheric tune with a great melody. It doesn't exactly fit the game very well, but it's a very unique and nice song regardless. http://ftp.df.lth.se/pub/media/soasc/so … 6581R2.mp3

Also, be sure to check out this great remix by Richard Westall: http://www.remix64.com/track/richard-we … ers-party/

For a while, the Gimmick! OST was totally underrated, but everyone who usually check these kinds of threads knows how much it kick ass.

Also, Saskrotch has a pretty good blog about some cool OST and other stuff (http://latenightswithoutfriends.blogspot.com.br/)

I have a tumblr with some "mainstream" osts and also some other obscure stuff (http://musicadevideogame.tumblr.com/).

I'm a huge Harvest Moon fan, and there's this one bum note on the SNES version of the game in the Town Theme that makes me cringe every time.
I find it kind of fascinating because I always wonder how something like that would slip in and be overlooked.

It's about 43 seconds in.

Yeah this piece sort of has an erie overtone, that doesn't make sense for the game...I get what you mean..

I noticed this years ago too! but I blamed my GameKing (cheapo portable SNES emulator)  since it had awful music emulation. big_smile It's like they were trying to make a bluesy chord but it didn't quite work out right...

Apparently...Jason is now a pirate !!! wink

The Alfred Hitchcock theme for a futuristic game like Shamus (which is awesome btw !) is strange ! XD (Not that interresting but funny ! tongue)

I always think that this song was too happyish for a game like this ! tongue Makes me want to dance like I'm swinging the 50s ! lol

I kind of think on zombies at my neighbors they were going for a Monster Mash kind of thing...I think it sort of works...to lighten the mood...totally agree on the other two, it's total pirate music and Shamus' music is just, not right for the game..at all...great stuff!!

i LOL'ed at that one super-late zombie laugh in the middle just before the tune loops.  it's the zombie equivalent of homer simpson's "mono... doh"
