Isn't there any atari pokey win-a-midi-interface-competition ?
Awesome idea, good luck to all the participants. God knows i'm ashamed, but I don't like sega
For SMS:
MOD2PSG: http://www.kontechs.de/product?name=mod2psg
Chipsounds: http://www.plogue.com/?page_id=43
SN-EMU: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=56653
YM2413 Samples: http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2009/1 mples.html
SN76489 Samples: http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2008/1 ample.htmlFor SMD/GEN (YM2612):
TFM: http://shiru.untergrund.net/software.shtml
YM2612 Samples: http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2008/0 -pack.htmlAssembly or C is always an option too.
XPMCK is a better last resort than ASM, imho (and the only public tool at the moment for making complete Mega Drive tracks, I think).
Cuz this is all I have:
Sound (PSG): Texas Instruments SN76489
4 channel mono sound (3 Square Waves, 1 White Noise)
3 tone generators, 10 octaves each, 1 white noise generator
Exaclty, Important notes
* 3rd tone channel can be set to drive the NOISE frequency, else the noise only has 3 different frequencies.
* The noise is slitghtly different between "versions" of the SN76489, say from a ColecoVision, which uses a discreet chip than the SMS which has it on its VDC. But the musical results are very similar.
*Noise can be set to "short" which basically is a 1/16 or 1/15 Pulse width waveform.
(ie 1000000000000000) ..
you can have a look at http://mamedev.org/source/src/emu/sound/sn76496.c
for more details. This is pretty accurate now in MESS/MAME

Nice, I started working on some SMS material the other night, I didn't even know this competition was going on. I'll make sure to enter it for sure
Sounds good! This competition only started less than 12 hours ago.
Wow, competition! Never thought I'd see the day a dev would release early for a competition around here. We should ask Neil Baldwin to run a competition for an early release cartridge of NTRQ. *hint*
EDIT: Actually, there is a certain someone I know who has some secret prototypes in the works who might consider this approach to improve hype! Bravo Little Scale, may your competition turn out some cool tunes!

Really awesome! I think my only option is to use samples as my XP laptop isn't fast enough to handle TFM or MOD2PSG.... Would we be disqualified if we really warped some of the samples in LGPT or something? (that's what I plan to use) Excited!!!

I am not against the use of effects, manipulation or pre / postproduction. It is up to you.
any chance you're gonna sell those midi>sms cables ?

Yes but clearly not before the end of the competition.
