OK, you asked for it... if you are already including support for SNES controllers, then that means you will be reading in 16 bits:

  1. B

  2. Y

  3. Select

  4. Start

  5. Up

  6. Down

  7. Left

  8. Right

  9. A

  10. X

  11. L

  12. R

  13. (None)

  14. (None)

  15. (None)

  16. (None)

With the last 4 bits essentially wasted - so why not add in support for an extra four buttons occupying those 4 bits?

A simple implementation of this would be to daisy-chain two NES controllers together (with the data-out of the second controller's shift register tied to the data-in of the first controller's shift register) and now you have 16 buttons to play with! big_smile

^ not *quite* what i was asking but your mind went outside the box so thats very cool...  and in a good way too.  (i'm not evaluating its possibilities just saying you make a good point about possible wasted potential in this regard)

mainly i just need to know about peoples preferred button macros for the 4 extra buttons which don't have a direct corresponding DMG button.  either program-specific, or generic macros.

i added your overall thought to the list of ideas:

http://chipmusic.org/forums/post/155844/#p155844

i'll just update that one with contributions and link back to them for ease.

thanks so much for the input!  really appreciate it

Would it be possible to have this circuit board have an auxiliary hookup so maybe one of the buttons on said controller could be used to toggle between normal clock and half clock when your easy clock kit is installed?  Or is that too far-fetched or challenging?

its possible,

and, its neither, its just outside of the scope of the project wink

How about using them for 'latched' button-presses - ie. if you press the Right-Shoulder button once it will simulate the Right D-Pad being held down until you press it again to release? Like so:

X = A (Latched)
Y = B (Latched)
RIGHT SHOULDER = D-PAD RIGHT (Latched)
LEFT SHOULDER = D-PAD LEFT (Latched)

Would probably be a good idea to also have a condition where the Left / Right Shoulder buttons will 'unlatch' if the opposite shoulder button is pressed, or if the opposite direction on the D-Pad is pressed... just so you don't end up with the Left and Right directions both being held down at the same time, although maybe that would make for some nice glitches? smile

I was going to say something similar.. Basically make them "Turbo"  buttons like some of the Nintendo pads you could buy for fighting games. I have a pad I wanted to mod to a dmg for that purpose because it would make some really nice glitches in LSDJ and possibly even MuddyGB. It turned out to be a mod far out of my league atm but the thought is still there. So I must say I agree with uXe on making them latched for those 4 buttons but i would not make the condition to turn the opposite off when the other is triggered that limits the possibilities of their use in my opinion. People will just have to get in the habbit not hitting them if they dont want to use them but people like me wanting to experiment with glitch outs and the use of multiple buttons being held down in MuddyGB is extremely useful and may actually make MuddyGB used a lot more.
