it depends which way you want the pot to turn. Put the input on the center, and the output on the side of the pot you want to be at full vol. Then ground goes to the remaining unused pot.

Im guessing if his budget is $100 for an amp, his band isnt playing big enough gigs they just cant turn their gear lower to compensate for his amp. If he plays bigger ones, they can mic the amp.
