From what I undestand the pis audio output is just using the gpio pins ala arduino to make sound.

also you might be surprised how UNMUSICAL the atari chip is. You should play with synthcart in an emulator just to see how difficult writing a song with one can be. I see it as more of a gnarly beat box.

But be careful and check the resolution, otherwise the screen will autostretch the video out. I dont have a problem with this because i do offset trickets on raspberry pi, but there are a few others that people like to use:
