There is no right or wrong way to write music, only methods that will work better or worse for you and others.  Think of it like the difference between making pancakes and waffles.  Both use the same batter, and yet they end up on your plate in a different form. This is what happens when you alter writing styles.

Writing melodies first will help you create a melody-centric song.  Starting with percussion or bass might help you determine other factors first and make them a more prominent feature.  Starting with a guitar or other stringed instrument in your arsenal as accompaniment will probably lead to you writing in the keys of E A D G C etc.

My advice to you - find something simple that works for you and then start changing things. Deviate from the norm as soon as you have your feet wet and feel comfortable with your software.

OK, so, back to the original question, then.  How does one safely turn off a calculator that doesn't want to turn off?

Oh yeah.  What's the "golden standard" calc to use for HT2?  If the 83+ has limited ram there must be a unit that doesn't.

inb4 someone says "Well there's your problem, you pressed ON instead of OFF!"

I did a battery pull today on my 83+ because I couldn't seem to quit HT2, despite numerous presses of the ON button.  I was notified RAM cleared, and HT2 is gone, along with my first several attempts at writing on it.

If this is normal, maybe put a warning somewhere prominent saying removing your batteries will wipe your software and work.

If this is not normal, what happened? Any idea why HT2 would not allow me to exit?  Music was not playing, I even tried loading a new empty track slot and quitting again to see if that would work.  All functionality worked except for the ability to quit, it seemed.

Edit: Oh yeah.  Doors is still installed somehow.

More thoughts: Can you build in functionality to put the calculator in suspend?  This would resolve the problem of not being able to quit, because I don't need to quit, really.  I just want to conserve battery life while I'm not writing.  This is just a portable music writing station for me...it was a paperweight before that. smile The only time I expect I'll ever really need to be elsewhere will be to run updates or backup files.

Certainly not using it for maths, now that would be just plain silly.

Does the 83+ have less song storage space with HT2 like it did for HT1?

-Donner Yellow Fall (Analog delay, small form factor, $40)

Delays and reverbs tend to add a lot to chip.  I like to use panning to set up an effect/clean channel.  Things I want to have FX i'll send right, clean I'll send left, for a little wet/dry mix I'll keep it on L+R.  I hardly ever use panning as a means of beefing up the mix nowadays, as it tends to add noise to the mix, which is tedious to get out and very noticeable when working with clean, crisp pulsewaves and such.

Distortion pedals can be used to good effect but are harder to make use of than the aforementioned, I think.  I only got one good mix using a modded distortion pedal a few years back.  Distortion gets really apparent at 2:20.

I was wondering if there'd be any way to add analog sync capabilities to this.  Nanoloop and LSDJ recently hopped on board, and it would be great to be able to sync those to Houston.

It occurred to me that with panning, one would theoretically be able to send a clock signal on either L or R and your song could still play in mono on the other channel.

Also, are there any key differences between these supported units?

I'm curious if any of these calculators have noticeably more desirable sonic properties and/or faster processing.

Alright, I got that taken care of.  Now I'm in Doors  7 and trying to open HT with no luck.  Tried both .8xp and .83p.  The manual says it should be running "unless there are errors".

I can't seem to highlight the icon as it says in your tutorial, it just goes straight to error screen when I push enter if my cursor is over it.

I took some pics of the process: http://imgur.com/a/lg7jk

Is there an installation guide for this somewhere?  Got houston.83p on my 83 plus, running gives ERR:SYNTAX.

Hey there!  I'm Anthony.  Some of you know me, some of you might not.  I'm a recording artist, owner of Nonfinite Electronics, etc.

It's been awhile since I organized a compilation, and I'm chomping at the bit to do another.

The Rules

The concept for this compilation is simple.  Pick a song you dislike, for whatever reason, and do a cover of it!  Hopefully, by the time you're done you will have a song you enjoy listening to and believe others will enjoy as well.

I will be accepting submissions until Monday, September 28th @ 9AM CDT.  You can send your submissions to demos [at] retronaive.com for review.

Bonus Points

While any submission is welcome, I am looking to convey a particular overarching method or approach.  Here's what you can do to get noticed.

- Incorporate multiple instruments in your song.  Vocals, drums, violins, harp, harpsichord, guitar, hamboning, finger cymbals, didgeridoo, etc. are all welcome and encouraged.

Additional info

I recently opened a netlabel, retronaive, that I intend to use for avant garde/chipmusic releases.  This label will take advantage of the nonelectronics client base in several ways.  We will occasionally send out updates about new releases on retronaive.com through our mailing list, and in this particular instance, I'd like to send out several hundred copies of this compilation as a free value-added insert.  This will be a great way for you to get exposure to new listeners and a good way to get the new label on the map.  This compilation will be Retro Naive's inaugural release.

For more info on Retro Naive's approach to music and submissions, go here.

Go here for the official call for submissions post on my blog.

TL;DR - Take a song you don't like and turn it into a song you do like.

Hi!  Love the release.  I'm noticing "Coastal Bummer" doesn't have lyrics attached whereas the other three do.  Oversight, perhaps?

Can you post some of the older versions for update as well?  I have some 2.5s that I tried to update to 2.7 not knowing it would cause the cartridges to stop functioning.
