i can confirm that, often when we speak of "train accidents" over here we're being euphemistic but this was really an accident.

ok, don't worry too much about the lagging. i think it's lagging because of my crappy graphics card. next week i'll try to install another one. i'll let you know about the results...

as to why the script won't run, i don't have a clue. seems it already fails at the APPDIR=$(dirname "$0") statement. i don't get any errors or anything, instead the java man page will be printed. if i simply do java -jar everything works fine though except for some minor error messages. jre6 here btw. i tried it with openjdk as well, same problem.

anyway, thanks again for this wonderful software! and yes, it would be awesome to have it as a native tool. should be console-only wink

yo syphus, thanks a ton for making a linux build of this! however... the shell script won't run on ubuntu ;( also, is there a way to set latency and reduce the visual output? cause right now it's lagging like hell and i don't want to reconfigure my jre every time in run chipdisco. btw i'm using sun jre.

i'm not sure if the SID's frequency resolution even allows concert pitch.

moc - console audio player (mocp)

YEEEEAAAAAH! i love mocp. it plays virtually any format you have codecs installed for. unfortunately it has no support for multitune files though.

Answering the OP question, I think if I was starting now and learned about XM/MOD I would consider it a road that was already trodden, it is only a matter of time until the LSDJ community is viewed in the same way.

in a few years history will repeat itself and LSDJ will be seen as awkward and passe to the up-and-coming quantum computing subatomic particle music scene

2 of the finest statements ever made in the history of chip music.

milkytracker does not use a soundchip, it's a .xm (sample-based) tracker.

however, there are a number of tools availble that allow you to convert .xm to other formats.

but i somehow suspect you already knew that.

i suspect this thing might have a very high latency. generally speaking a usb interface will be the best option for you, but it's definately worth investing a bit more.

say what? a mic+headphone all in one jack? never heard of that. but it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't work.
are you sure it's a normal jack and not a 3-line headset jack?

Exactly. Limitations are what makes chipmusic fun.

depends what you mean by limitations.  aesthetic limitations are one thing but technical limitations for the sake of it seem a bit weird when we're not distributing things as source files.  but well, personal opinion and all that.

i do share this personal opinion wink

Limitations can be put if you wish so. Like 4mat's chiptunes. If you have unlimited sound capabilities but you want to use a limited set of sounds, don't you have the self discipline to do it that way instead of getting lost in "infinity"? Why can't you try to do a mod that just weighs 16KB? Can't you pu the limit yourself? There's a problem there which exceeds the platform you are using.

tiny .xm tracking rulez. but i think there's a difference between fighting against limitations that are externally defined (ie hardware limitations, compo rules), and setting those limitations internally (ie limit yourself).

i f**ing love XM and i think it's the best choice if you really want to learn tracking in-depth.

However it has one huge downside, and that is

the reason i started to do chip is because i prefer to work with a strictly limited set of sounds. if i have unlimited sound capabilities, i just get stuck fiddling around with the sounds and i never finish anything.
