well there is a whole big feature about doing exactly that in this month's computer music magazine

i have nothing against sharing it with you EXCEPT i don't have a scanner and i'm not going to type it all in. so i guess you'll have to buy the magazine

go buy a scanner they are $10

maybe i should get the whole article tattooed on my body and then walk from here to your house barefoot so you can read it

maybe that'd be the easiest way of you reading the article

i have tried to hack around this with userscripts and stuff...

but since we already have two selectable stylesheets, maybe a new one would be the easiest way to do this. chipmusic.org NETBOOK EDITION. basically the site doesn't look great in horizontal resolutions below about 1200px or so, and a lot of people have horizontal resolutions not much more than 1000px, or they are using tiling window managers, or anything else. so a simple "minimal" css would be lovely.

i know not many people have the access/skills to do this (maybe two people?) and the people who can do it are super busy and have other priorities

but doesn't hurt to ask i think (if you don't ask you don't get etc)

so think about it smile

ah,  when you are new to chip music Aka VIDEOGAMES MUSIC  the allure of having your song in a game seems to override any common sense.

take heed ! an0va and chunter are clever guys!

also i think you will find that:

if the game is unsuccessful or particularly amateur or even never gets finished (one of these is usually the case with people posting publically looking for game music on a forum) you are quite likely to get no satisfaction from your music being used in the game (or not being used in the game because the game), so if you didn't even sort out a good contract with regard to being paid, you will feel pretty shit. quite often indie developers like to refuse to pay you because either they know their game is worthless, or because they don't like some tiny aspect of the music (edit: indie devs will never tell you what kind of music/sound they want until after you have already written all of the songs, and then they will suddenly become incredibly specific about it) and they like to micromanage everyone. if you've already written the songs this is pretty disheartening. don't let this happen to you

on the other hand, if the game becomes the next minecraft and you agreed a crap contract because you were desperate to get your songs into a game / get exposure, yes, your songs will be in a game / you will get exposure. but you will feel crap anyway because the game sells thousands of units and you don't see a penny in royalties. so don't let this happen to you

the first scenario is much more likely to happen than the second. don't agree to an unfair contract to indie developers in the hope you can piggyback them to success, because they are probably never going to get successful and they are probably going to use their lack of success as justification to screw you over.

i would also recommend never doing spec work / "competitions" unless you really feel that you can win the "competition" with not very much effort at all

and of course it's up to you if you are that desperate to Be A Video Game Soundtracker, but writing a 10 minute song for the vague chance of $100 doesn't make you the next virt or whatever

well, i'd be fine writing a song for $100. that'd be fine

i'm not writing a whole song just to be entered into a competition with others for the CHANCE of $100

but i don't do vgm-style so it doesn't matter what i think

edit: maybe a better idea would be to have the competition (if you insist on having the competition) about 15 or 30 second bits of songs, and ask the winner to develop the song in full ~ or even better, let people enter songs they've already written into the competition, and only if they win then asking them to write something new. 10 minutes of music is a bit commitment just for a chance (although might be quite a good chance seeing how little interest there has been wink ) of payment, the less commitment you expect the more entries you will get and if you choose someone before the song is written you may get more feedback or dare i say CONTROL over what the song sounds like. no one is going to write a 10 minute song for the privilege of being asked to write another 10 minute song (unless they are really desperate), so whatever you get in the competition is all you are going to get, i feel

edit: but i don't do vgm-style so it doesn't matter what i think

because it gets me girls

You're my 8 bit Girl, can't erase you from my system
I've downloaded software that I hope will make you listen
You spread through my circuits, corrupting my files
You're like a virus,
Making everything worthwhile
you make my heart race like one gig download speed
And its true you're the only Anti-Virus I need
To stop the Trojan Horses and their stampede
You're my 8-bit Girl at 64-bit speed

you're like the first generation of playing games
And it's true you'll play with my hearstrings again and again
Bounce my emotions and i'll run away
I'm on an 8 bit overdose, you're the same
And its time for us to fucking upgrade.
Just know that if I was to change
Things will never be the same.

And when I become a little fautly, would you still want me?
Or take me down, like I'm from '93
Because I know I'm small and insignificant, yes I'm only 8-bit
But i'd dedicate myself to you, every last bit.

my buddy is pretty HxC into it, but he's an obese manchild.

I think the genre is dumb, and it's a stupid practice,

They don't even use this kind of music for real video games anymore.

"Why the hell would you want to waste your time making, producing, and listening to music nobody outside of a small group would want to hear?"

^ now that's a proper title for this thread.

edit: added listening because apparently people haven't gotten out of their; HOLY SHIT SONIC MUSIC SO GOOD! phase.

well i got into it because i liked the sound

i stuck with it because i like the sound, mostly
but als the community is nice to take part in. and also i always suckd at DAWmusic

now i am addicted to the trackers i use and even if i'm not doing "chip" stuff i suppose i will always be tracking

nostalgia and limitation don't really come into it. not on a conscious level anyway. i was never a gamer. but before this i was making music with microsoft sound recorder and/or a qy-20, so maybe old sounds and crap interfaces are permanently inprinted into my head

when you download for free a piece of software that was made by one person for his own enjoyment how much customer service do you think you are entitled to? he said he even LEARNED A NEW LANGUAGE  to translate the documents

maybe when any of us have more than 30 pieces of software free to download and use on our site  we can tell shiru what he needs to do to earn respect

truth is shiru is more knowledgable and positive contributor to this scene than any of us will ever be (including you, reader of this post, whoever you are)

and some people (myself included.. maybe you to) just do have "emotional issues" (in your eyes only, or truly). pointing it out achieves nothing, and particularly pointing it out publicly on a forum even less so

edit,  to others:

last version of impulse tracker was more than a decade ago. most of you use gameboys from 1989. you should be able to deal with discontinuation/end of development by now

as 4mat says there is an inbuitt  help system and a manual. if you have tracked with madtracker and goat tracker you already know how to track and fasttracker 2 is just a tracker after all, you don't need a tutorial you just need a manual

also i agree with 4mat milkytracker and openmpt are not similar to ft2 (milkytracker is really crazy, dunno why they did those "improvements" that they did). ft2 or IT are actually still the best trackers for making modules in my eyes, sadly, althought openmpt is undoubtedly very powerful and quite easy learning curve

i think he watches the screen and you control him by flashing the screen in certain ways

but i don't know of any documentation that explains the control codes, maybe you can REVERSE ENGINEER it
