Hey guys, the V command has been cutting my pulse instruments short...any idea why? Using V02 even does it.

It's on my Gameboy Color, for the record.

I think I might want to do this...I don't have anything to send to you though sad Would it be cool if I sent like a text file that you could print out a couple of times and drop them in?

The pixel art style, you know. When it has qualities of pixel art. It looks rougher, generally a more minimal colour palette, rougher, it just looks like pixel art. That's an awful description, but I'm sure you get what I mean. If you can look at it and say that's pixel art, that's what I mean.

That's actually a really really cool thread! I'll read the whole thing sometime. It's cray how all these people know all these techniques about it, when they're really not taught anywhere haha. I'm glad that there's a good thread on this, I'm totally going to check that out in detail.

I write to try and sound like Electric Children.

That was a joke. Really, I write because I want to get the awesome rhythms I think of out of my head and into listenable format. I love the way house and dubstep sound and how rhythmically complex they can be, and it's fun to listen to/see. I really do like the way Electric Children's music sounds/looks, and I do try to emulate that, along with a bunch of other artists styles, and I guess it's more of a personal thing for me. I try to reach their level of composition, and sound like everyone that I like combined, so that I can listen to myself and sound like what I like to hear.

Of course, I'm not trying to say that I write to be someone else. I write in my own distinct style with instruments I make myself. And my music does have my own feel to it. However, I do want to keep my favorite artists' sounds in mind when I write, because ultimately, that's the sound I want.

tl;dr: I like the way it sounds

I think the reason why piano is the main "theory" instrument is because it's very visual. Sure, guitar is, but it's less easily understandable to anyone as piano would be. C is next do D, as E is next to F and so on. It's just very easy to show people things on the piano. I don't think schools want to just force you to learn a certain instrument, and they're not doing that either. They just want to teach you enough to get it.

SurfaceDragon, they're not by any means calling you out on terms of ethics at all dude, they're just wondering if your recently posted stuff could really be called pixel art.

The question here that is being discussed is what definition of the following best describes pixel art:

  1. Anything made of pixels
  2. Anything drawn pixel by pixel, by human hand.

With this out of the way, I think that pixel art is less of a method, and more of a style. I recently was given a piece of artwork to be used as pixel art from my buddy Shriker. It's absolutely mind-blowing and really awesome. I consider it pixel art, because it looks blocky, it has the qualities of art drawn pixel by pixel, and it is very detailed on the pixelated level. That is what makes pixel art pixel art.

He didn't draw it by hand.

Instead, he did it with Photoshop, keeping the pixel art style in mind. That is what makes it pixel art. There are many means to an end, such as drawing it out pixel by pixel, or doing it in GIMP/Photoshop with computer assistance, and personally, I believe that neither method deserves more praise than the other. They are both two completely different ideas and ways to get the same(ish) result. In the end, if the final piece has the qualities of pixel art, then it should be called pixel art. The end.

On another note, let's change the subject to something other than a worthless forum debate...How exactly is dithering done? Can you guys post some examples of your dithering styles?

Accents in music sound so cool! I always love when people do that. I hear American accents all the time, it's nice for a change when I chill out to music.

That's really good SurfaceDragon! Do you do stuff with colour too? Dithering?

^ This kept me from checking out that site when I was new, and people new to chip music may not have any songs to upload (sure they could upload some blank file, but that's dumb) this way they're open and people can find them with the release for easy download. New people can see how the program works in a song to get a bearing on things.

At any rate, that's the way I'm doing things, free savs all around.

I think this is the best way to learn. Thanks for doing this Zef wink

Dude, lucid dreaming is freaking awesome. I wish I was actually good at it! And SD, that is actually very deep...I stay up late a lot, and I tend to be more creative during those times.
