Do- have many stages of compression

Don't- think your EQs and compressors need to be set the same through the whole song

This is generic and debatably useless advice, but I think it might be a useful guiding principle: Your mastering has to suit your aesthetic needs, sonically speaking. If it sounds right to you, it's right; if it sounds wrong, it's wrong. Keep experimenting with new tools and you'll find ones that leave you with a master that reflects the record you wanted to produce.

This is good advice considering that typical ant1 music may lose some of its edge if another process is put on it.

The other thing I forgot to mention, I know many people who simply finish their mixes and pass the result to a friend to master/polish.

This isn't a subject that has easy answers, as learning to master is as difficult as learning to mix.

I will take the raw output of schism or a played NSF file or similar and, if relevant, compare it to other tracks in the release. I'll usually start with a very subtle, nearly inaudible reverb that damps out almost right away, ringing in emptier parts of the audio spectrum. If the result doesn't blend with other tracks in the release, I'll put in an EQ next that adjusts to make the song "agree" with the others. Then I'll use a compressor, maybe a multiband, maybe a mid/side, maybe both... to bring out a little bit of "click" in note attacks. For that sort of music, that's all I do.

I use many of these:

and sometimes these:

My understanding regarding some of those artists you named, some of them have access to higher level stuff (though some of them don't,) and that if you have a bad arrangement and a bad mix, no amount of mastering will improve the song, it can only enhance its badness. I hope that was helpful.

I think going for the attack/decay (volumewise) will probably do more to define "piano" sound than messing with pulse widths.

I think the people who create that stuff couldn't enter for assorted personal reasons. There are a few "usual" things that don't seem to be in this time, I'm looking forward to the results.

Okay, I understand. The confrontational tone of things made me feel a need to push a little.

By the way, to whom it concerns, when I feel frustrated because nothing seems to be happening or when I think somebody is getting undue attention and I want an excuse to ignore it, I make a point to do something creative to make myself feel better, even if it's simple or I don't like or keep the results. Sorry if I've mentioned that here already.

I don't think so.

I like ant1 and ZanZan's musics, because I listen and remember what it was like when I recorded myself making music for its own sake, didn't have to show anybody, and it didn't matter if there were site hits, downloads, sales, audience...

Not everyone can or should push boundaries, but not everyone can or should sell to the masses. Thinking there isn't a place for one or the other goes against Lazerbeat's last bullet point- (not) bickering about what (chip)music is.

But how do you feel? smile

I hope you've been busy.

True since at least 1996.

I think the point of many posters is, don't be afraid to branch out and market to your genre, not just Chip types, which is easier for some than others, always will be.

Google images ftw.

The musical phenomena do come in waves, but it's important to remember one thing- It is pretentious to claim to be the next thing, it's better to actually be the next thing and let the spectators decide that you're the next thing, see those people who put "official" on their page titles.

I can only think of one person that answers Boomlinde's question, though I'm not the best person too answer, I agree with Linde's assessment that it's not like anyone is preventing him or anyone from making music.

Speaking only for myself, when I feel frustrated by a proverbial establishment of artists it is because I know the music I like to create doesn't fit in with their tastes, which isn't anyone's fault.

To put content back in the Necro, Chibitech's tune is starting to prove some of the points made in this thread.
