My friend has just ordered a bunch of PCBs and some components for these. The plan is to sell them either by by just the PCB (~25 EUR), PCB and a surface mounted component pre-soldered + some odd DC-DC coupler (~40 EUR) or pre-built ( ~200 EUR, with a custom laser-cut wooden case, without SID). We'll set up an ebay store or something once the boards and components have arrived, and until then, nothing of this is really "final." smile.

8/((8 + 4)/2)-1 = 33%

I think that's it! More generally lsdj1/((lsdj1 + lsdj2)/2)-1 = renoise groove

In case you don't have LSDJ grooves that average to 6, though, the tempo will be off, but the groove relationship should come out right regardless.

I tried this briefly some year ago. I didn't really get into it, but the synth has a nice and flexible modulation matrix. It's like a semi-modular!

To get back on topic, there was a swedish TV ad maybe a year ago that was made to look like a cracktro, complete with a scroller and a 4-channel chiptune. I think they've finally found my weak spot!

Calling Calvin Harris or anything like that chipmusic seems like quite a stretch, though. I don't think that chipmusic is so much about the sounds; it's how the sounds are utilized and to some extent the technology behind them that matters.

Once I woke up from a dream with a melody in my head and scribbled something like "dun dudoo-din din din" down in a notebook, which made perfect sense to me at the time.

... Putting stuff down tracker-style, I think that it's an awful waste of paper. You don't need staff paper, just draw out the rhythm and write out the tones above, or maybe just do it MML-like or any tone+duration representation. Drawing out empty steps is silly.

Finally a home for bad PRNGs!

This is great! I'm never disappointed when Mecha Konami Sound Te... eh Virt releases something.

I think your best bet is to disassemble some software and look how they did it. I don't know anything about the YM3256, but if it's anything like the OPLL, you have to put it into percussion mode, set some frequency values for the voices that are used and then just set/clear bits of a single register to trigger the different drums. I think the OPL2 works this way, too.

I agree that basic piano understanding can be more or less useful depending on your goals. What really bugs me is the idea that not requiring it is doing you a disservice. I think that grown, thinking people should be allowed some more flexibility. If you are a great guitar player with an excellent sense of harmony aspiring to compose for guitar, the piano courses may simply be a waste of time in attaining that goal.

EDIT: To clarify, I think that picking up a second instrument can be extremely useful, but it shouldn't necessarily be piano.

Nice! How much would a fully assembled unit cost from him on average?

I don't remember, but he's been very reasonable. Just send him a mail and ask.

Akira, it should work with VICE (it's based on the Hardsid API), but drivers only exist for Windows, as far as I know.

Now you are just putting words in our mouths.

You should try to comprehend my posts and refute the points I've made instead of going into rant mode about something totally besides what I've been saying. There hasn't been any ethical discussion about the matter outside your own head, and no one is calling your art fake. The question (again) was: Is it pixel art? I think it could be an interesting discussion if you didn't totally disregard everything I write to walk around the issue. I guess you agree with me now, though, since you suddenly call it "fake pixel art." Personally I don't think it's fake in any way. Just not pixel art.
