Fantastic work! This is going to make a lot of people, including myself, very happy. big_smile Great to hear you'll be changing the colour scheme soon. What were you thinking?! yikes The colours in the screenshots look terrible I'm sorry to say. Please, no pink or red default colours. smile

Also, +1 for PAL support please.

And I know it's early in development, but it might affect the whole structure of the code so I'd like to make a feature request: Live Mode a la LSDJ would be awesome.

It was me who mentioned your music. Thanks for those links - Terraforming Mars is especially lovely. smile

There is plenty of chipmusic in time signatures other than 4/4. I'm completely biased but I think creating tracks in 5/4, 6/8, 7/8 etc. is a lot easier with a tracker. With a tracker you just change the length of a pattern to give you the number of beats per pattern that you want.

Here are some examples I can think of.

Alex Mauer's NES album Vegavox 2 is awesome | http://alexmauer.bandcamp.com/album/vegavox-2
Zenith is in 5/4, Gravity Hill is in 7/8 and 6/8

One of my favourite tracks on this site is by microB and I think it's in 11/4 ! | http://chipmusic.org/%C2%B5b/music/hole-shaped-you

I've released an LSDJ track in 6/8 and 4/4 | http://chipmusic.org/freezedream/music/anarchist

And on my Today Sega album there's a couple | http://freezedream.bandcamp.com/album/today
Realtime Love is in 5/4, Green is in 6/8

nitro: Cool! I didn't know it would be possible to write to the flash from the console hardware.

yikes It's a beautiful thing. But no RAM on board, hey. hmm

Awesome work and thanks a lot for the update. I'm very interested in following the development of this.

I have young kids and they love playing tetris on the original gameboy, but I think they've learnt some of my appreciation for old hardware. smile

Someone was asking about a vectrex scene?

little-scale has made some nice music for it and even created a MIDI interface.
Check it out!

what's the difference between say, a soundblaster or adlib, and a synth like the FB-01? or the FM chip in a sega?

Adlib: YM3812 | 2-OP | percussion mode | 4 waveforms | 9 voice polyphony
SoundBlaster 16: YMF262 | 4-OP | percussion mode | 8 waveforms | 18 voice polyphony
FB-01: YM2164 | 4-OP | noise gen, LFO | 1 waveform | 8 voice polyphony
Sega: YM2612 | 4-OP | built-in DAC | 1 waveform | 6 voice polyphony

Perhaps someone could try to make a graphical "family tree" of FM synth chips?

Also, you didn't mention the SoundBlaster 2.0 (CT1350B), but I guess it's pretty similar to the SoundBlaster 1.0 - it has a YM3812 and I think does 8-bit stereo playback/sampling at 22kHz.

Looks super! Thanks for the detailed tutorial! big_smile

Thanks Lazerbeat! One of these days I should get back to making FM chipmusic... hmm

fedepede04: Not bad hihats, but still rather clicky. Perhaps FM+filters could help. That crash sound reminds me of a grandfather clock or something. It's hard to get a nice complex cluster of overtones whilst also having a nice bell in FM cymbals. I guess oscillator detuning could help with that. That said, I don't think any type of pure synthesis can make a very nice pseudo-realistic crash cymbal yet...

Hi! Glad you're considering using FM for percussion instead of samples.

I had a quick play with one of my snare patches in TFM Music Maker for literally 5 minutes and came up with this. It's played with pitch slide, a fast retrigger and the delayed notes doubled at lower volume in a separate channel. I'm sure you could do much better!! smile
