ive been impressed with the cheap korg analogue stuff. limited save capability but you can sync from the GB easily sending a click from the noise channel.
I like to send the click to sync signal to the monotribe then out to my volca beats.

Been doing it for 10 years now, after using the Game Boy for 8 years I moved on to the C64.

just use fast vibratos and experiment from there.

if you have the all of the tracks in the game boy for just beats and base, why dont you have snares and part of the bass line on the 1st pulse, kicks and other bits of the bass line on the second pulse, wav channel for more bass kicks and snares and other percussion and noise for cymbals and whooshes.
goat tracker lets you make C64 music with PC/Mac. C64 has really nice features like filters and ring modulation that other old systems dont have.
but it isnt vary noob friendly

Unless you are dead set on using cynthcart try SID-Wizard in an emulator or goattracker first!
