Where I am at, there is no such thing as a chiptune scene. There is one guy who gets a few gigs, but mainly through his art, than through his music.

referring to gentle hurst? used to be sydney fam smile if you ever get a chance to cross the bass strait let us know and we can do chiptune stuff m8

I'm not a part of any of the chiptune facebook groups anymore though. I tried early on but there's a lot more noise and pointless crap to sift through than on here.

the big one (i.e. chipwin) has gotten a lot better in that regard in the last few months, but social media in general is all about brain farts and talking shit. but yeah i still like this forum cause it's usually more curated and informative. seems like i should check ucollective more often tho?

assuming this is LSDJ:
i like to start with a toned noise (something like C3 or C4) and then morph it into whitenoise with a S command really quick, just make sure your noise type is free instead of stable. the big thing for more "edm" chip stuff (and edm in general i guess) is the stereo snare trick, where you put a really quick left to right (or vice versa) pan at the top of the table, then center it straight away.

if you can fit a kinda high-pitched wav kick kinda sound (more like a tom drum really) under the noise snare then you'll get a really big sound going.

luv u cmo, but its all about irl now heart

I'm such a noob with music terms. Would a 3/4 be 4 Phrases in a Chain that is strung together in 3s, or the other way round? Or am I totally off all together?

3/4 is putting a H00 command on row C of a phrase, and accenting the beats on rows 0, 4 and 8.
6/8 is the same, except you accent rows 0 and 6 (or 0, 3, 6 and 9 for fast stuff i guess).

this is all just LSDJ tho

also:
here is some dissonant 5/8 chip stuff i did with a tb-303
this is some pretty 6/8 chip stuff i went and done
and this is some post-synthpop 7/8 thing which isn't chip but still cool

nice, wish i was there!

1. toilet, shower, driving, in bed when i'm just about to sleep. just gotta make sure i write that shit down ASAP and/or repeat it in my head/out loud for long enough that it's committed to memory. right now i've got a whole bunch of full songs just floating in my head until i have time to record them all (but they've been there for at least 3 months, some of them way longer).

2. not really, i can't sit down and just make music if i feel at all like shit.

henry fkin homesweet. nice.
looking forward to the rest of the lineup!

^ haha what? there are heaps of great USB interfaces. maybe switch to firewire if you're picky about latency? :\

and then building a decent desktop is like an order of magnitude more expensive than just buying a decent USB interface. depends how serious you are maybe? all i know is that having a fairly portable recording setup is really great.

+1 anyone recommending focusrite stuff. if you can get a 2nd hand scarlett 2i2 then that would be great!
the lexicon alpha is good too, bit on the old side but it should work ok.

also kinda OT but regarding game boy whine: it's ~9.25KHz and you'll get it with or without a prosound mod, but you can easily notch it out with a parametric EQ smile

this thread is now the bryface appreciation thread

yes. i saw them looking at me real weird and i was like "oh that's not water is it?" and they were like "nope" and then i poured it back and we all laughed. (except on the inside i was like omg kill me plssss)

the conversation wasn't that interesting, i was worried about how hard it could be to occupationalise my degree and bummed that i don't have a lot of time to make a lot of music. it was just a lot of stuff i needed to hear from someone older and wiser than myself and it was really cool that it was this guy i basically just met then. singing ay yo, how good is chiptune
