Then its a bit of a mystery. I havent found a combination via mp3 i like(the most universal for my intents); a 46mb conversion gets squashed to a 4-6mb even at the highest/best quality. Thusly, when a track reaches the nets it's acquired a murky film that sounds a bit thin and flat.

a lot of streaming sites like soundcloud transcode your file to 128kbps for streaming purposes, so it could just be that.
personally i'd never use anything lower than 320kbps* for mp3's if possible. the lossy nature of the format means you will lose at least some information in the conversion but the audible difference between 320kbps mp3 and wav is pretty miniscule.

*although i am kinda partial to the smokey character of 96kbps! tongue

Hrmmmm... I don't like this. Several of those artists were basically portrayed like "my music sucks but I shout and stuff and I give it my all so that's good enough."

tbh i'd be okay with this

yeah this is dead set unecessary effort unless you're just doing it for a lark

music theory will help you to understand the relationships between notes, chords, scales etc.

but in the end it won't really help you to write good music

I feel without this, without this COMPETITION. we are all going to stick with the music we know. Nothing new is going to cross your ears, at least not from a new artist. We are turning into a circlejerking mess and it is why I suggested this.

i don't think this is entirely the case, but i see where you're coming from. i think we can all be more enthusiastic about each other's work and then we can avoid any negative consequences a traditional ranking system might introduce.

i don't think it would really harm the site as much as some people have projected - i think the community that's been established here is, for the most part, mature and respectful enough to use a more prominent music charting system responsibly and also not make a huge deal over it.

tbh though the only reason i post music anywhere is so people will listen and perhaps give a little feedback (weeklybeats being the only exception), and anyone can make a thread for their song and get at least a couple of replies. so for me there's little need for any systematic charting.

some of you think that even this is an attempt to drum up hype.

gosh, i'm actually factually glad i'm not as cynical as that!

When people show extreme enthusiasm I get the impression that they lie to themselves as well as others, which makes promotion a difficult balancing act.

i am genuinely, extremely enthusiastic about my own musical creations* and i would love everyone to love them as much as i do. that said, 99% of the time that i decide to change a song based on another person's opinion i end up loving the song even more. i appreciate the view that one's art is one's own and that outside influence undermines artistic vision, but for me it all comes down to my own euphoric response elicited by the end result. the input of cm.o last week helped me take a pretty mediocre tune by my own standards and take it to that "euphoric response" level.

tl;dr the reason i whore my music out sometimes is to make myself feel good and i think that's okay.

*however: i think that i, myself, am a bit of a git!
