yes, I am using the mic jack on my Mac (It's stereo in). I fiddle with the EQ knobs on my hardware mixer till I get what I like. I figured out how to get the levels on the recording software (Audio Hijack Pro) just right so that I'm not hitting the cut off. I usually get the levels around center of the meter so that only the snares and kicks are just touching the yellow range. As for audio interface, would one of these work? I really don't wanna spend too much money.

I had a hunch that I wasn't equalizing correctly, although I have no idea how to do compression; looks like I have a fun project this weekend. I'm gonna be honest, my ears aren't the best, what is the general rule of thumb when equalizing and compressing?

So I wrote about 10 songs and I wanna put them out into an EP. I pro-sounded my DMG and the sounds is better, but whenever I try to record I'm always disappointed with the sound quality. I record in Wav 16-bit loseless and it still sounds kinda poor. It doesn't sound as good as some of the other artist out there. How do I go about making it sound like I know what I'm doing and not an audible mush?

I record with Audio Hijack Pro and I have Soundbooth and Logic 9 to edit audio. Edit: I have a Mackie 802 Mixing board as well.

If you put something together I'll the make the drive out! Would be super awesome if I could play as well.

I doubt I'd be ready to play a show... but if it landed on the right day, I'd do what I could to get from the other side of Indiana up to see it. Any chance of the venue being all ages?

I am going to aim for all ages, at the very least a 16+ show.

No details yet, talking with someone who has possibly offered a venue. It will have to be on a day that isn't Friday or Saturday. Show of hands if you would be interested in playing a show in Chicago within the next 3 months, what day you would like to play, and a range of time that works for you.

A friend was mentioning that we could get I Fight Dragons to headline a show. Apparently they draw pretty large crowds, bigger than 200 people. We have maybe 3-4 opening acts and then IFD play. We could easily get a larger venue with them playing.

I'm still tracking down the Enemy Sound place, they're a little hard to get a hold of but would be a good place to play. Someone on reddit mentioned a place called The Empty Bottle and they are know for having obscure genres play there. I will have to look into it.

As much as I agree with Noisewave about selling ourselves short and not worrying about crowd size, we have to keep in mind the finical risk for both us and the owner of the venue. Thus why I think we should stick to small venues that are low in risk and cost, but not sell ourselves short. The house venues sounds good and it would be great if we can get the names of a few places.

We should worry about getting a show together and hope we pick up momentum from there.

This is a step in the right direction, seeing as its not local it shouldnt be monthly, bi-monthly can work.  Would it be totally blasphemous to get some other acts that arnt particularly chip?  I think broadening the spectrum couldnt hurt the attendance rating, make it more appealing to more people.

edit:  after posting that i realized that gigs have names to make them more marketable see post.

There were these 3 guys (I don't remember their name) at Gli.tc/h that used a Playstation, NES, an Atari, and a Sega Genesis and they would fit perfectly at one of our show. They aren't chiptunes but they would definetly work at the show. edit they are more of visual/musical act. hard to explain with showing the video.  Pic of their set up I have a video of their performance here (uploading at time of post). Sure there are many other artist in the area that would like to perform that aren't chiptunes, but at the same time chiptune like music is the primary focus of the show. Also, most of the artist at Gli.tc/h could do AMAZING visuals for us.

I sent a tweet to @EnemySound asking to get in touch, since I can't find an email adress on their site.

nonelectronics.com is located in Madison, WI. Super good service. Would recommend.

im going to have to say that nowhere in chicago really draws for chip gigs (or most types of electronic music, for that matter)...not saying it cant happen, but id say its unrealistic to expect more than 20 or so attendees for a chip gig in chicago... think the most ive seen was around 50 at an all-chip gig... think more people were at the night of gli.tc/h that minusbaby & nullsleep played, but that was roughly half gig, half loft party and they werent charging at the door

edit: also, why do gigs need names?

What you're saying doesn't give me much hope for a larger venue, but I do think that a chiptune scene can grow in Chicago. I'm starting to think that maybe I should get a show together at the Enemy, the loft/venue used to host the Gli.tc/h show, and get a bunch of local acts from around the midwest. If we're lucky we can draw a similar size crowd and maybe turn it into a monthly/bimonthly show if it's a success. Over time we can get larger crowds and work up to a larger venue. They're probably not gonna charge any or much money so they're isn't much to lose other than our time.

i played at the house cafe once with doormouse. it wasn't packed at all.

How was it for a chiptune shows though? You know of any places in the city?

A freind recommended Subterranean but I think that place is a little big for us. We would have to bring a big name act to fill the place up to cover the cost and by "Big Name" I mean, someone like Anamanaguchi.

It's not exactly Chicago, but The House Cafe in Dekalb would be a perfect venue. It's not to big and they somewhat know what they're doing. It would be super easy to book a show there.

I took a look on Google Maps and the town is a ways outside of Chicago. I worry about not drawing a large enough crowd. I will defiantly keep the venue in mind.

The real question is: Which ones are worth looking at?
