Awesome! Neil is working on doing more with this type of sync with his music titles. He gave me an early release that allows you to control the step sequencer in PR8. It also will allow pattern change as well as reset. Keep up the great work! More info soon.

Re: Best Audio mod for the Genesis (16 replies, posted in Sega)
I have tried just about every model of the Genesis looking for the best audio. I used the Crystal Clear Audio mod from tiido at first, then i switched to the unmodded model 3 which was a bit tighter and cleaner sounding (didn't matter that it was mono because i was using TFM - which didn't support panning). It's also possible to stereo mod the model 3... Recently, I bought a good High Definition Graphics model (from madgearstore) and did a full electrolytic capacitor replacement. I have to admit - there is a little more signal to noise ratio but overall the sound is much fuller. I remeber having a model one and loving playing it with my headphones on when i was like 12. There is definitely more bass and the thing doesn't sound computery or digital. That was basically my gripe with both the CCAM and the model 3. I might as well have been using a really accurate emulator. Both the model 2 and 3 have ASIC versions of the YM2612 which means you won't see the actual chips on the board and I think the sound suffers because of it. On the High Definition Graphics model one there is a dedicated YM2612 and for some reason the PSG master system chip sounds way better. If you're looking to replace the caps you will need:
7X 47uf 16v
13X 10uf 16v
6X 1uf 50v
9X 100uf 10v
4X 220uf 10vWhen you replace the caps - the voltages do not matter so much... you just don't want to go down in volatge - up is fine. I bought a cap kit from Jameco but after reading about HIFI audio amplifiers I had another thought. Why not replace the caps in the audio section with some really hi-fi stuff: Like some Black Gate or Elna Silmic caps. After reading this article i think the problem with the audio output is not really the original schematic... its probably the horrible components the units shipped with. I know that from modding tons of Boss pedals they make a great product and overtime ship shittier and shittier parts inside to cut costs and make a more profit. A lot of the complaints with noise on the Genesis come from electrolytic capacitor drain over time so you start to hear unwanted AC noise, VDP noise, and general tone harshness. It's much more apparent on an FM machine than on the NES' 2A03 because those don't actually need an amplifier for line level on a mixer. The FM chips need really amazing amplifiers with very accurate capacitor filtering.
This is very helpful information. Cap values are very helpful. I have a couple of GenMDM's and was looking to modify a couple of consoles here very soon.

@m00dwg
I don't know if Neil's latest Public release does, but Ninstruments does offer a sync enabled Pulsar cart/MCTRL bundle, as well as PR8, NESK-1, GlitchNES and Lightwall cart bundle options. (wow I kind of sound like a salesman) So there is a working system here and now.
Just to clarify, I spoke with Neil yesterday and he hopes to have more time to work with me and MCTRL. So far PR8 is the only software title of his that has a direct MCTRL version. That is not to say we will not work on other titles, just need more time from both of us to finish. I have to say I use my Cirklon with the MCTRL version of PR8 and it is sooooooo nice to have direct step sync. Super clean and very usable, Now I sound like the salesman

One sugestion that comes to mind is the Just Giving campain that Neil Baldwin suppots @ NTRQ.net
It is a good charity and Neil has given his talents to the chiptune community freely. Just a thought.

+1 this. Neil has been extremely generous with his time over several years even up to today.

I've spent $100 on worse. Curious to how it sounds more than anything, but for the money it's a must get.

Cirklon ROCKS! I love mine.

I think it's a cool idea as long as there are clear goals and a a design. Without that it's a non-starter for me as I can't really get drawn into a ad hoc development - I just don't have the time that I had when I was making all of my other software. Sad but true.
I see your point. I guess I was thinking of the method for handling samples like you have in PR8. The biggest complaint I read is the samples in MIDINES are 'not good', so one of the first things I think we should have is a way to change out samples like you have in PR8.
I think we could find a couple other people to help with the protocol handling and midi messaging. That part could also be worked out working on the interface. The biggest issue that I see is having a programmer who already knows their way around an NES and can troubleshoot fairly well without having to get up to speed on the nuances of NES programming and I can think of no better person than you.
If you had to even guess at a time frame, are we talking years? The next hard question is, is this something you would even be interested in? I know you are up to your eyeballs with cool projects, especially after opening Marmot Audio. So if we are talking about a pipe dream, please let us know.

Thanks Neil for posting. I know this would be impossible to ballpark as far as time drain goes, but take PR8 for instance. How much time did that take to create the initial build from concept to latest revision?
I understand your time is extremely valuable, so I would want to make sure you were comfortable both in time and funds and would not expect you to work for free, but if it is too much time, than we will need to face that fact as being the insurmountable obstacle. If it took Jarek two years to finish Chip Maestro, I have to admit, I'm a little worried that it would be just as you called it. 'time drain'.

I think Kitsch has the right idea. I sent an email to Neil about this thread. Hopefully he posts. I could donate $500 right now and more later on as well as fabrication services too. I'm already involved with the NEW Super 8 project. Link here:

It would be great to have a NEW cart for the new Super 8 too.

Re: Chip maestro and midi controller (122 replies, posted in Nintendo Consoles)
Instead of hacking it together, you need some real firepower features in the program itself, not just an interface. Neil Baldwin imho is the best qualified. He would be able to recognize how best to implement software features, such as custom upgradable samples and super tight arps and sequencers. Once the 'foundation of features' was laid out then you could nail the interface down, (maybe even CV/Gate too . Without the right program I think you are putting the cart before the horse.
IF WE ARE REALLY SERIOUS, then we need to build some funds to get Neil interested. With a super usable program and solid interface than you would have the ultimate NES solution.

MIDINES is superior, but new potential owners BEWARE and DO NOT purchase a 'new' one from the wayfar site! You will just get ripped off. The only real good option is to keep an eye on eBay. I just wanted this mentioned in this thread.
