I'm currently working on a little videogame with my girlfriend and I'm gonna do the music and the SFX for it in LSDJ.
The music is no problem for me, but I never really created sounds that are pure SFX like laserpistol, steps or fireballs sounds.

I already found the helpful Danimal Cannon Tutorial where he explains some of his sounds for Bounty Hackers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfh79wcpvds

, but does every one else has nice tutorials, tips or other resources for videogame sfx?
It would be a great help. smile

This could be fun...

* Laser pistols -  Really fast (LFO speed) downward pitch modulation (EDIT: this is wrong, I meant upward ramps, not downward). Like a sawtooth shape modulating the pitch. Seriously, it sounds like a laser gun.

EDIT: oh yeah, doesn't the LFO in LSDJ have a sawtooth mode?
So basically like Evil Scientist said about the V command. But try out the sawtooth.

Example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bmhliy38i1l91 … r.wav?dl=0

* Steps - Low frequency long noise, short envelope. If you notice, when someone sets down their heel, it makes a lower pitched sound than when they finish the step, and set down the toe. So its a fast low pitch to higher pitch.

EDIT: after dinking around, I think I prefer just little tiny low pitch sounds.
Example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/58nebyhaapmwr … s.wav?dl=0

* Fireball - I made an ok fireball sound by using low frequency long noise, and going up and down on the pitch like a pyramid. A fast pyramid.

Have fun.

Sorry guys, you're wonderful smile

I thought it was a good post as well. I think you were saying that people are unaware of their own motivations, or possible messages in their own music? I absolutely agree with that. There's so much that we basically take for granted in modern society.

i like it. somewhere around 2:00 i think you could change up the bassline pattern though. maybe use a couple different variations. drop a bunch of notes from it, then bring them back in, etc.

Yeah,. I agree with that. Just change it a bit, then change back later.

I don't know if Chiptune is intrinsically punk, though I think for a lot of people (myself included) it holds some kind of punk-connection. Personally, I think the connection comes from both the D.I.Y. aspect, the musical/artistic limitations, and the community associated with it.

Don't forget that punk was also retro. It was a throwback to 50s-60s garage rock. It was a revival of something old. Like chipmusic.

Why can't it be both? Maybe we are all lonely nerds, who want to work alone. Most of us aren't in bands. That's important too. It's like punk in some ways, but socially it may speak to a group of people who are alienated, and who are technology nerds.

I think if you put masking tape over the actual music, and just study how people relate to the medium, And relate to each other... That's important. Maybe more important than the music itself.

Ok, I might be trippin, but try putting this   in the .asoundrc file.

pcm.phase {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmixer"
       rate 22050
}

I may be totally off base but the rate property may work there. Worth a shot...

Edit:  oh, I think his website may address this. try downloading this file to the directory you put Phase: http://humbletune.com/phase/chip/settings.json

It appears you can also make the buffer larger in that file. you could try setting it to 1024, and leave sample rate at 44100.

Mmm now there's a thought. Make a bash script, and launch from that.

which in turn poses the question: how do you give more depth to the tracks if the more conventional methods can't be used? Or maybe the cool thing about chipmusic is that it's all "in your face"?

I enjoy really dry sounds. I try to take advantage of them. But if you want depth on-device, basically just make your sounds As dynamic as possible within 4bit sound, which is actually quite a bit. Use different volumes to create layers. Use envelope command a lot. Use the left/ right balance to spread sounds in the stereo field. You can go far just with volume and panning.

Actually one more big one is pitch detuning. In LSDJ for ex, just vary the fine pitch of pulse instruments in the 2nd track. Play the same notes in both tracks, for a detuned effect. But just spreading out the pitches slightly gives nice results. It gives a crazy spacial  sound.

Edit: oh shoot, another easy one is simulated delay. Just program delay effect using envelope command. If you have two tracks running simulated delays, ity will sound lush. Or interleaved delayed notes on the same track.

Ah, I see now. It's a little ARM computer with Linux installed. I like it! I thought it was more like a Dingoo or whatever.

Thank you for the information. I've tested it, it works out of the box on my pocketchip (including the plug of my midi keyboard in the usb port), that's brilliant.
The console things are only for downloading the app, and reducing the sound quality so it will be easier on the CPU.

Ok! Good to know!

New program for Pocket Chip. Pay what you want apparently. Haven't tried it but this looks pretty cool. It's made by humble tune, which Makes a bunch of crazy minimal apps. Makes me want a P.Chip for Hanukkah. Wonder why installation requires terminal commands. Is that common on this platform?
