This all depends on if i have money when you are collecting, and the prices:
Atari 2600 32K ROM-Only cartridge- probably one of these, but I need to get some more info (my supercharger is in a box somewhere. I hope.)
Apple II SD -to-floppy adapter- I am very interested in this. I am pretty sure it would quickly pay for itself since I won't have to buy more disks at $1 or more each. If the price is right I might be interested in a few.
z80 dev board- did I miss some details on this? I might be up for this.

I am not big on trackers, but I am still interested in all of this.
Also, i love synthcart.

They'll get mass produced. It just may take a bit of time to get there. The whole point of this design was supposed to allow for easy mass production (i.e. no reused parts.) and therefore a lower price. We'll get there. A flasher will happen too.
How soon, and what prices should we expect (for carts and flasher)?
I am very strongly considering a smartboy or 3, but a few things have kept me from jumping on it, such as them not being in NA, little info on how frequently they ship and previous issues with customs. With everything people are doing here maybe I should just get in on some of that with the money.
Love that color!
+1, another great color choice, Apeshit.

Re: WTB: 32mb EMS (11 replies, posted in Trading Post)
they were never advertised, leading to low demand, so fewer were sold? if so, them being uncommon could lead to the old supply/demand thing.
it could also be the same thing (which i don't understand) that causes prices of extremely popular games to sell for high prices. Look at pokemon or zelda carts, for example. These were really popular and sold well, and they are very easy to find now. For some reason they regularly sell for higher prices than less common games, even though they are plentiful. I suspect this was caused by some people who were willing to pay more for their favorite games, then people saw the price paid and asked for or paid more thinking it was what they were worth, and now those higher prices are what they are worth because of some weird marketplace feedback loop. If anyone has a real explanation for this phenomenon please share it, as i find it very interesting (and annoying, as a buyer).

Re: Is anyone else here only for the hardware/mods? (56 replies, posted in General Discussion)
To answer that last question: I'm into portables mostly and currently experimenting with mods and paint jobs. I currently collect but don't play as much as I used to. Yeah, that's probably stupid; owning the hardware just to pile up or mess around but not actually play anything on it.
Hey, at least you are doing more than just looking at the boxes they are still sealed up in (which is also fine). It bugs me sometimes that I have so many DMGs, when realistically all I need is a primary and backup or two. I love doing mods, but i always want to keep all the game boys i work on I attempt to justify it by pretending that i need this one dedicated to nanoloop, and that one for lsdj, and these over here are for games. And that yellow one is for a little of everything...
there are others, and i have ideas for a themed one.

Me
I have to use it in a different gameboy though, because it doesn't fit my kitsch case.
They fit ASM cases, if you like those colors. They are pretty fucking nice.
I'm not trolling and I don't 'hate' chiptune. I just don't enjoy listening to it.
Most important hardware developments have happened on these forums or by people closely related to chiptune.
Do Kitsch, ASM or Thursday Customs have threads in other important forums? Maybe a forum with a custom Game Boys thread with more than 50 pages? I'd love to see that.
When I open Benheck's handheld forum all I see is a bunch of "Game Boy inside a frying pan mod" threads that lead nowhere.I'm sorry if my presence here bothers anyone, it was not my intention at all.
I get where you are coming from, but I also get where other people are coming from. As was said a post like yours is a bit of a slap in the face to some. On the other hand, if there were no hardware people involved with this stuff at all the strictly music people would be using stock hardware or turning to the modders or original accessories. It takes all kinds...
To answer your original question, I am here for a bit of everything. I love music, games, mods, etc. I like the sounds of the old hardware, but i usually combine it with other stuff. do you play or mod anything other than game boys?

Re: Is anyone else here only for the hardware/mods? (56 replies, posted in General Discussion)
tbh i'm kind of the opposite. i'm not a huge gamer, and i suck at modding consoles (especially gameboys). i was so attracted to gameboys as an instrument because of their limitations. i'm not a creative person, so i have to either limit myself musically, or come across an unreasonable amount of inspiration. and because the gameboy is so limited, I'm able to write actual songs with structure and focus.
but i'm weird, so pay no attention to me. haha
That is part of what work for me as well. my first real tool specifically for chipmusic was synthcart. very limited, yet allows you to do so much. I avoid most modern music production software for computers because i would never be able to finish doing what i am trying to do.

Re: Is anyone else here only for the hardware/mods? (56 replies, posted in General Discussion)
There are good reasons for modding consoles even if you don't plan to use them for creative things, but like Cooshinator said I think it's kinda strange to come here just for the mods when this place is mostly about music.
Very true. I kinda suspect a bit of trolling on the part of the OP. Realistically though I have found that kitsch, Apeshit and
others frequently post new things they are working on here, and it provides a place where ideas can be shared that are useful for musicians, gamers and modders alike.
who the fuck uses a game genie?
I do. I bet a bunch of the people who buy them on ebay and such do. Some modern flash carts have game genie functionality built in.
rygD wrote:there are many better and easier options for making music, so if you don't see the reason for people playing games on a game boy that was designed for playing games, how can it make any sense to you to use it for music?
a) i dont use a game boy that often in my music anymore
b) it always was more that i like the specific sound characteristics of chip hardware, not the fact that it was a game boy/NES/c64 really... and i use plenty of other "better" gear alongside chip stuffwhat im saying is that i dont see the point in adding a backlight to a dmg/gbc/pocket when there are other options to play those exact games on that already have a backlight (or like i mentioned, use a NUBY/wormlight/other existing lights).. as far as other mods you'd do, i've never been big on purely cosmetic mods and i cant really see a good reason to do other functional mods to a game boy just to play games on it
a) other people do
b) good, you have your reasons, just like retrogamers that use old hardware have theirs.
you don't need to see a point. people will still do it because there is a valid functional use for it. were there not they would never have started lighting the displays of handhelds. Have I shared my mods? either way, art in many forms is popular around the world, and I guess you are not familiar with many hardcore gamers. Go check out some of the computers people build. Also many mods can be useful to gamers, such as being able to change clock speed. It allows you to move through a part of the game faster, or slow down whatever is killing you. these were made for games and people will continue to use them for that. People have always modded their gear for personal reasons, whether that be for doing something different with their music, making their experience playing games more enjoyable, for having things they like to look at, or have fun with, or for bringing back an iconic classic into their daily lives. Classic cars are a good example. there are newer cars that are more fuel efficient that have more bells and whistles, but people still love fixing up the old ones and adding purely cosmetic things to them, as well as improving things over how they were manufactured. they enjoy doing it, others enjoy seeing it, and it all makes the money go 'round.
When all is said and done I am here because this is a place where discussions on two of my hobbies collide. OP may not be here for the music, but get over the other shit people are into that you disagree with or dislike. It isn't hurting you.

rygD wrote:I typically play my games on the original hardware they were designed for. I could play my game boy games on an sp or super game boy or emulator, but, i know for me and many others, that lacks some of the appeal. Some of these game boys and consoles have been with us for decades, and are like old friends, so why not improve them?
there is value to both sides.
wel if you really wanted to be authentic, you should just use a NUBY light
and its not like i was even suggesting emulators (which are totally fine), its gba sp
If I have a game boy, and used it for years to play a game, i may want to play the same game on the same system i have always played it on. I never said anything about authenticity. I also never had a light for my game boy, but that has nothing to do with deciding to make it easier to see NOW. plus those lights suck compared to backlights. it makes perfect sense to add a backlight so that people can see the games they are playing instead of replacing what they already have or want to use with something else. Additionally, some people enjoy doing mods, so they get enjoyment from the game boy 2 ways. Ever tried to use a game genie with an sp (or anything other than a DMG)? Not a great choice. Game boy cameras were made to be sticking out of the top of a game boy, not the bottom. the sp is also a bit of a hand cramper, and is not quite as durable as older systems. It is a great design, and i wish i still had mine, but there are many reasons to go for something else.
I mentioned emus because they are a better option than an sp. many people already have things they can use for on the go gaming with a backlight and not need to fuck around with cartridges or carry another device. there are many better and easier options for making music, so if you don't see the reason for people playing games on a game boy that was designed for playing games, how can it make any sense to you to use it for music?

I missed this thread...
Since the feel you are going for is along the line of most stuff i do i will poke around with carillon and see if i can manage anything. This should have been bumped more often to keep it fresh in people's minds.
edit:
not likely to happen this year. I have too much going on right now to mess with carillon. If I manage to throw something together i will email it to you.
This is a great idea. Halloween is one of my 2 favorite holidays, so this needs to happen. Has anyone submitted anything?
