The show was great!
Starpilot killed it - then had a heart attack.
J Arthur Keenes Band brought his A game - which is pretty fucking A.
TouchBoy raised the roof - but sadly not the projection screen (which kept falling down).
Natty blew the whole thing skyhigh - whatever that means!
Expect some videos to be online soon! Courtesy of deadbeatblast and I! Also expect live recordings courtesy of TouchBoy and deadbeatblast!
And to Natty; next time you're in town I'll buy you a beer to offset some more of that tax!

Topic: [Oct 2 - Toronto] Nuit Blanche Mega Chip Show (2 replies, posted in Past Events)
EDIT: We don't have a 'gigs' section, but this seemed to be the closest to it. If you want to move it, feel free.
Dear chiptune musician,
Before you read on I'll explain what this is about so that if you're not interested you can stop reading now. This is an offer to play a show to a large public audience. It doesn't pay, because we have no money and will be making no money directly from the show. However, we'll be making a compilation album with tracks from all the participants to sell and the proceeds will be split evenly between all performers (hell, if you've never recorded any of your tracks we'll record them for you free of charge). We did it last year and we had a huge audience.
Nuit Blanche 2009 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj2gJla7A7U
If you're still interested, read on.
My name is Jeff Alyanak. I am a chiptune musician and performer from Toronto. Last year, along side deadbeatblast and DJ Eastern Blok, I organized a guerrilla chiptune concert outside of city hall. With little equipment, no promotion and little organization we pulled of an extremely successful show, drawing in huge crowds and holding them for hours at a time. The show was great as it was but I immediately got to thinking how much greater the show would be next year. The biggest thing I wanted was to have an even larger group of performers the next year round and to increase the promotion of the event.
That's where you come in. I want this year to include as many performers as possible, so that we can run it as long as possible. Nuit Blanche runs from sundown to sunrise and that would require a large number of different performers to attain. I doubt that we'll complete that goal but I'd like to get as close as possible. I want to start the night with an open mic and then allow each of our performers a 30-45 minute set (or a bit longer if required/wanted/etc). The gig, of course, has a few restrictions and quirks that may scare some of you off but I really hope you consider it.
Since the event will be done guerrilla style it is possible that we will be told to move at some point. Though this is unlikely given the atmosphere of art and excitement during Nuit Blanche (last year we were cheered on by the Nuit Blanche staff) we must plan for the eventuality. So equipment must be kept to a minimum and must be planned in a way that allows for easy setup and packup (Ideally we should be able to move without stopping the music. The second requirement is related to our power source. We have two large car battery/inverters that we will swap back a forth (one always being recharged as the other is being used). Most of this power will be used for the amp, which can run for about 5 or 6 hours on a single charge (though cold weather will lower this number). This means that, while additional low wattage items can be used, we want to keep it to a minimum. Got an effect unit or two, that's cool, but try to minimize your stuff (use batteries where applicable).
My motivation for the event is primarily a love affair with chip music. I really just want to expose more people to it, and I'm looking to book a lot of musicians that I love to listen to. However, I understand that people want to make some money doing what they love, too. So to do a little bit to monetize the event, I'll be putting together a compilation album. Each artist playing that night will submit one track which will be added to the album. We'll sell the album at the show and split the proceeds evenly. You can also sell your own swag - shirts, CDs, etc - and give away promotional material for yourself. There are nearly a million people walking around on Nuit Blanche and they are a demographic that is very receptive to new forms of art and music, so it's a great chance to market yourself.
So, that's the plan. Make a CD, play a show, have fun. I'm sure the event will be a great experience and even if you aren't able to come, please keep in touch with me about further shows in the city. If you have any questions, or want to help out in any way, or just need to talk about your feelings, drop me a line at: jefftheworld at gamerarmy d0t com.
Cheers,
jeff
PS: Send this to anyone you know who would like to play this show!

Re: Atari ST with no sound output (7 replies, posted in Atari)
There are a lot of outputs you can add to an STf model. As YERZMYEY said (and nordloef and Reteris via their posts) the STf models use the same DIN connector to output the video and sound to the monitor (which has a speaker in it).
The STf series uses the same housing that the other models do, so when you open it up you'll see a metal housing within the plastic housing that includes some holes that are meant for outputs that weren't used.
Cutting a hole in the plastic to line up with those holes in the metal housing will make you job easier and will put the output jack in a nice convenient spot.
Simply insert and fasten the output jack of choice (be it RCA, 1/4", 3.5mm) and solder the ground to any of the grounded plates on the mainboard. The signal wire must be wired to pin 1 on the back of the 13 pin DIN connector.
The link below, like those above, includes that pinout info. Just remember that you'll be soldering it from behind and so the pin numbering will be reversed.

Did I mention all their songs start with "Space"?
So, what about you folks? Any music you hate to love? Love to hate? Any CDs that you have to buy with cash so your sgnificant other never finds the bill?

Re: Got any tips for boosting the chip scene in your area? (52 replies, posted in General Discussion)
One thing that I can't stress enough - at least in the beginning - is that you must be doing more for the scene then you do for yourself as an individual artist. Booking a show just to be the star of the show isn't a great way of doing things, book a show because you want to see that show and you find things will turn out a lot better.

So, anyone get a chance to play it yet? What do you folks think?
Obviously, I think the art design is incredible (done by Paul Robertson of Kings of Power 4 Billion % fame) and the music (some group called "Anamanaguchi", weird eh?) is great, too.
As someone from Toronto, I think this is the best game set in this city, bar none. Love all the weird little references to the city, too.
Seriously though, as a game It's lacking in some things but for the price tag it's a lot of fun and totally worth shelling out.

Thanks again guys.
kitsch wrote:i'm not sure if you've tried this, but put something in the second banks, and see if it helps. switching to them, when there is nothing to load, may be part of the issue in why things are seemingly becoming stuck after having accessed the empty banks.
Unfortunately my troubleshooting options are limited with respect to reformatting etc.; being an OSX user without Parallels or Windows (yet) I had to use a loaner PC to install the file management utility, cartridge drivers, etc., and I don't have access to that machine any longer. :\ Will probably have access to other PCs in the future so as soon as I'm able I'll try to start over.
kitsch wrote:on the back, bottom-right, of the cartridge (melted into the plastic) is a date code. something like 1005, 1006A, 0912, whatever...
what is the date code? the latest PCB revision (which is what the date codes partially reflect, the letter is for more than one batch in the same revision) is 1006A, which are functioning beautifully. it must be a model EMS is comfortable with as well, because they've been using it the last 200 we got, and usually they cycle to a new one quicker than this...
the date code may reveal a lot.
Unfortunately the one I've got on-hand is marked "1006A." Both carts actually belong to my roommate and he's got the other one with him at the moment. I'll check it when he's back.
In the "Does This Mean I Fucked Something Up" category -- one anomalous thing I did notice during the formatting and flashing process (which did, at the time, involve several iterations) was that when using the formatted & ROM-flashed cartridge, the descending Nintendo logo was mangled. Worryingly, it was mangled consistently (i.e. the manner of glitching was consistent every time, not variable the way you'd expect if it were just a bad contact connection etc.). So maybe something I did during formatting punched these carts in the brain. Possible?
In my experience that mangled logo is a result of having no software on a given page. Mine does the same thing when unloaded.

Re: Gameboy stereo reverb/lpf/delay? (8 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
you could fit it with set pot amounts, and then just an on off switch
Yeah, or just have one pot and one switch. You might be able to fit all that if you use a very small switch and a very small pot.

Re: Gameboy stereo reverb/lpf/delay? (8 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
If you wanted any control over it, probably not. Not internally, anyway. It's just a matter of space limitation, though, if you made a breakout box you could do it easily enough. However, if you were going to make it external you'd probably be better off utilizing standard 1/4" or RCA jacks so you could use the unit with anything you had.
However, depending on the size of the chip and how creative you got, you might be able to put it in with little or no control over it. If you remove the speaker and put a pot (potentiometers) in there, you might be able to control enough to get dial in the reverb, though you'd be hard pressed to it controls for any other parameters.
I suppose you could get creative, utilizing one (or more) of the channels in LSDJ to control the parameters of the chip may allow you to use one Game Boy as an effect unit for another. Realisticly speaking though, you'd probably just want to put a bunch of knobs together in a box with a couple inputs and outputs if you wanted to use an IC like that to it's potential.
Now, on an NES you could certainly do it. The NES has so much extra case space it wouldn't be hard at all. Throw a couple pots in and route the audio ouput through the chip and you could have some sweet built-in effects.
