I'd love to see the source code for that last one, because as long and annoying as it would be, it would be nice to modify the text.

We all know Ponyboy uses Impulse Tracker.

Of course, people have been doing this since the beginning of time.  Or at least as long as motor driven electronics have existed, it's just interesting to see what some people can do with these things.

Not the most pleasing to the ear, but still.

Doing covers helps you focus your efforts on learning the tracker without having to also concentrate on the hard work involved in actually writing a song.  It makes sense as a way of learning a tracker.

It does say it was made on a Game Boy on his page, and they he started making music on it in 2008.  It certainly sounds like Nanoloop.

Thanks ant1 and 4mat, I was able to find wav-prg after searching for other c64 tools, and as for the disk to tape lead I'll be looking into that. Thanks a bunch!

I just picked up a Commodore 64 and was wondering what the best way to transfer or load files to it would be.  I've been looking into using datasette cassettes recorded via my PC but I've had some trouble finding software and documentation on how to do this.

Any other thoughts on cheap and easy hacks or methods for transferring data would be much appreciated.  I'm not afraid to solder up my own transfer device, but I'm trying to stay away from expensive pre-built devices.

For the audience is really important to see the gameboy; remember to take it in your hands when you have time.
..the "just press start and jump around" approach works well. tongue

When i perform live i usually love to play first a very minimal song to receive a reaction like "lol.. look, he's playing with a gameboy" and then I go crazy and I do some MAXIMAL stuff to impress anyone "wtf is this still a gameboy? awesome". (noone gets impressed tbh, but i like to try it eheh)

May i see a pic of the strange black dmg you're using in the opening video!?

edit: this is my favourite starting song. smile http://www.trebledeathsystem.com/tracks/348

The intro clip on the video there was actually projected and played to the audience so that they understond vaguely what was about to happen.

What I really want to push myself to to is move around more and get the audience more pumped about the music.  I find it easy to do when I'm doing a small setup with no table, but as soon as there's a table and a few effect units between me and the audience I feel I don't move nearly as much, it sucks the energy out of me.  However, there are a lot of seongs where I use the units and table and can't really just get rid of them.

As for the Game Boy you asked about:

It's just a handy carry case for a Game Boy, it also has this blast shield thing that you can put on that flips down to cover the screen.  I usually take that off, though, because it blocks my RCA jacks when flipped up.

argh that sucks.

i do my live sets as a continuous mix, so i was hoping this would help me sync up the lsdj shit i wanted to drop into the mix. i guess it's back to mixing by ear

I suppose another workaround would be syncing your main pc (laptop?) to another.  The slave PC would connect to the game boy and would start and stop with the game boy as the main PC played through continuously.  Of course, this doesn't work well if you don't have a second laptop/netbook to spare.

does the arduinoboys led flash in sync when ableton is playing?
check on the axiom if the usb => midi out is enabled, press advanced then midi out, a small midi port symbol shows on the display

that's what it was, i figured it out late last night and forgot to update the thread.

alright, now i can get ableton to start  lsdj, but if ableton is already playing, it seems like it ignores any kind of sync function, even if i switch to live mode. as soon as i hit start it plays, no matter what beat ableton is or isn't on.

so i guess now i need to know, is there a way to play a track synced with ableton without stopping ableton?

also seriously, thanks for everyone's help on this

The way I do it is I create a blank chain in LSDJ, then when I start Ableton it starts to 'play' that blank chain, so when you later switch to a chain with actual content, it's synced.

Aside from that, I don't know a better method, but it could be that I just stopped trying after I found that work around.

The Game Boy is in Slave Mode, right?  Did you set it to "WAIT" by pressing start?

(Stupid question, I know, but I've missed even more stupid things while troubleshooting.)

I love to have a hadheld device that was built and optimized specifically for tracking.  To sweeten the deal it would have a modular soundchip design.  Want a SID chip?  Plug in your SID cart.  Want to do some YM tunes?  Plug in the YM cart.  Link them together for multiple sound chips.

The song in the third video sounds like something Nullsleep would write.
