I think it's trying too hard.

Grr... why do I bump it? I could just let it trickle down, but something compels me to comment on why I think I should just let it trickle down D=

I think length is entirely dependent upon the musical material, to be honest. If you have a theme that keeps developing and developing, hell, let it develop as much as you want it to. If it's not developing much but the instrumentation is keeping things interesting, just cut it short if it gets repetitive--if not, let it grow. Length should be a byproduct of musical fluidity and arrangement, not the other way around.

I'm learning this the hard way. I set out to do a 3 minute tune, but end up fully developing the theme by the 1:45 mark, more often then not. Sometimes I'll get lucky.

However, I wonder if sometimes it's not really a case of the song naturally developing as a short tune, but just me not knowing how to let the listener digest an idea before moving on to another one.

That's what happens when most of your composing is with short video game loops, I guess.

Edit: As far as actual examples go, this is one of my favorites:

It's actually a caricature of me.

Except I wear regular glasses.

Huh. Wish I could go, but Friday nights don't work for me.

Thanks! big_smile

you definitely have some cool stuff going on in there. I really like that repeating riff/melody in there but I agree with wandering genie that it gets a bit repetitive. I'd just make it a 2 or 4 bar phrase as opposed to just one repeating phrase. vary it a little bit with each repetition or something. go up to a higher note, create a persisting melody something like that.

neat noisechannel work, i like those crunchy drums smile

Damn it. He typed everything I was going to say. Really liked the percussion. Just when I thought it would get repetitive, you'd throw a variation in.

I'll be back later with more stuff to say.

Those are some really good ideas, and I'm hearing how that works in some of my favorite tunes, and you're right. If the repeating riff was longer, then it'd work without variation (SPEAK's "Carrie", for example), but since it's so short, it gets old. It'd probably work in LIVE setting where the repetition and layering of the other voices can build tension and hype, and nobody's worried about the composition of the piece, lol.

I'm going to have to go make a version two with a more melodic riff. Thanks for the input. big_smile

I try to sequence my drums from a drummer's reference point. I always try to match my drumming with what the rest of the musicians are playing, while at the same time keeping a "pocket" so it doesn't sound too ADHD.

I love noise percussion. I also love, bass, lead, and rhythm instruments.

I just wish that bass at  0:15 would go faster and be an octave higher.
Other than that it's slamman.

Huh! That's an idea. I'll have to keep that in mind for my future composings. Also, thanks! Glad you think it's slamman.

that would be like explaining to me the point of NASCAR.... such a headache

It's actually pretty interesting in a scientific way if you listen to the commentators without actually watching it. It is my theory that NASCAR is simulating a LONG cross-country race, but on a circular track. That's why the races are so long.

It's cool, like... they have to make sure they use the right tires that will wear out at the right speed. If they don't wear out fast enough, they lose traction. If they wear out too fast, they have to pit-stop and change them.

The science of it is all very fascinating.

*I'll just post new tracks here every so often. I've decided to expand "NiteRide" into a full-length project. Until it's done, I'll be posting related and unrelated new tracks here.*

Finally decided to pony up and put up something original to show where I currently stand in LSDJ. This isn't my first evar track (it's around #12 or so, I think), but it is one I think is worth seeing the light.

It even has art big_smile

I guess you could call this a debut single? I dunno...

Attempting to capture the mystery, danger, excitement, and calm of going really fast on a clear moonlit night.

I like noise kicks, and so decided to try something a little different with this one, and make it a little less crunch, a little more punch.

Well, this is what I do with a Gameboy (emulator for now), LittleSoundDJ, and consumer-level headphones and speakers.

...use those as song or album titles. That's a great way to avoid having a name you'll regret and losing a stupid name that you like.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense then. Or maybe, if you're a kid, you'd want to be able to switch off the light when your mom checks on you at night so she doesn't know you're still up making chiptunes at 2am.

Sketch, when are we going to hear more of your stuff?
No offense, but you've been talking a lot of game. I want to hear your stuff. You seem well versed in lsdj. It's time to put up. wink

Yeah, I know. I've been afraid of not being able to measure up to my smack. sad
But can't I just be one of those critics who knows what he likes to hear, but can't produce it? sad
I talk a lot but I'm still a baby... I just get really passionate when I see something with a lot of potential, or something that I really like but has something off about it... and I can't help speaking up. I'd tell Jackie Chan to fall more naturally if I got the chance, and I can't even do a back-flip =\

Anyway, just finished the artwork for the song (may as well do it right, even if it is just going into the CC section), so it'll be up soon...

Does your friend have any other chiptunes out there on the internets?

Nevermind. Found it: http://megaflare.bandcamp.com/

Yeah... tell your friend to learn how to REALLY use the WAVE channel (for more than just kicks), PULSE effects, and TABLES. Three albums of just stock sounds is no good (I think. I just skimmed).

And the melodies and progressions are really good, too. sad
