Re: LSDJ Composition Guidance (12 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
If you can play an instrument prior to writing a song in lsdj it helps. I play guitar so I usually use that as my starting point. I make a melody that I like and then I translate the notes into lsdj. Also listen to a lot of music similar to what you want to make. Dissect your favorite chip song and see how its structured.
And if you can't play an instrument but can hold a tune, your own voice works pretty well, too.

Yes I have. I've messed around with it. but it's pointless unless we can utilize the GBA's DACs or at least play with the wav channel properly. It's not far enough along to be useful at all yet. It's like a simpler, and a feature lacking lsdj to me.
Aah... I hadn't realized the two DAC channels in the screenshot were just placeholders.

Have you guys heard of www.furiousadvancetracker.com/ ? It's a GBA tracker. I don't know if it is relevant to this thread (haven't read through the rest of it), but yeah.
Oh look we have a thread on it.

Re: LSDJ Composition Guidance (12 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
There are a couple of threads here that discuss the topic of how people compose music, where inspiration comes from, where does the song, etc., if you don't mind using the search function.
But what I can say now is that you need a grasp on the elements that make up the type of music you want to make. Humming into a recorder is a good way to come up with melodies sometimes. First you need to know how to make music, THEN the programming follows. There are various resources online that discuss composition techniques and what-not.
Try copying a piece of music that you like.

Well I like chiptune of a variety of types so... I think it is good when people who are into doing live shows and stuff (I'm not one of them) try to build a fanbase in their community as opposed to trying to get all their friends to buy an EMS cart and LSDJ.
But yeah... like... I like chiptune so like... yeah. *raises hand*

Who is "anyone"?
Looking at the old forum posts I notice the more seasoned cm.o users used to much more care-free and open than they seem to be now. I don't know if that means anything to the chiptune/music community as a whole but... that's all I have to go on since I'm like... new and all...

Re: How to make a similar kick in lsdj (7 replies, posted in Software & Plug-ins)
but I think triangle kicks sound way smoother and punchier on a NES then they do in lsdj's wav synth.
... So you might want to adjust the waveform accordingly to get it sounding stronger.
Alternatively, if you want to try some synth wizardry you could try to find the midiness drum sample that was used in the track and analyze it, split it into single cycles, then merge those cycles with a single-cycle triangle waveform to see how they should look, then manually draw it into the wave screen :S
Oh also, do you think you could post/embed a youtube video or mp3 of the song to your post?

No it doesn't make it no longer relevant to the conversation. I just thought that someone should bring it back around to the original topic of the thread.
Anyway, for me, The minishness of the gba is uncomfortable. I'd rather play gba games on a dmg if I could.
You mod the gameboy because it makes it function in a new way that you like while keeping the elements of the original system that you like. It's not really that complicated.
As far as cosmetic mods go... it is artwork to itself. Some of these things are just really nice to look at period, like graffiti or skateboard graphics or whatever.
Swords are cool to look at, and it's fun to see different designs and things, but I doubt every sword collector would want to chop somebody down with it... (I'm sure some of them probably would, though... >_>)
