Try looking somewhere other than youtube? I know there are some roms floating around somewhere... I don't know if anybody posted it since I have flash disabled, but there is an NES demo "greeting card/invitation" from which Chibitech's Moe Moe Kyunstep Part I originated. I'm pretty sure the rom I downloaded was posted here once upon a time.
Edit: But I guess that wouldn't really count as a technical demo?
What's so bad about having the same color scheme as somebody else? It's not like it affects the sound or anything
+1 LMMS free DAW FLStudio-ish thingy. It has a bunch of chiptune based plugins, too. It can't output midi files, but it can output midi signals.
Trackers
Most tracker's are small and lightweight in general anyway. MilkyTracker, HivelyTracker, Beepola, p5tracker, etc... (I don't think any of those are popular, haha). OpenMPT can do VST stuff.
I download every single pc tracker I can get my hands on, haha.
General Midi
Jazz Midi Sequencer is a pretty great and powerful simple light little midi sequencer. I have version 4.0, which I think was the last proper release before it changed hands and went into development mode and stopped distributing full featured binaries.
For a really user friendly but-basic free midi experience Anvil Studio is nice. It takes some leg-work to get fancy effects going without paying $$$ for the "optional accessories", but if you aren't trying to push the capabilities of the format, it should be fine. It's easier to use than Jazz, but it doesn't grant ready access to all midi parameters. You can still do a lot with it, though.
Muse score can print sheet music.
Other
Paint.NET is a nice free graphics editing program. I think many people here swear by Grafx for pixel art, though.

Sound Club: If you want a really really quick way to sketch out ideas that isn't tracker based, I can't think of anything quicker than http://bluemoon.ee 's Sound Club (found in the "History" timeline). It is light, quick, and even can export s3m files. It has unlimited polyphony and stuff, not to mention the included samples are nice. The only "effect" it has is portamento, but it does have volume, tempo, and pan parameters.

I highly recommend you install the OneTab and The Great Suspender add-ons. They will make your browsing experience sooo much easier.
mediocre at best
Yeah, I can understand why you'd say that. But it helped that I saw dubbed episodes first, and then tried a subbed one and was like "naaah". I think it was the lyrics of the songs that did it for me, and since I didn't have the idea of "can't understand/speak xxxxxxx" as a major element from the beginning, it wasn't a major part of my idea of the mythos of the series. Degraded, yes. But I don't care because I enjoyed it.
I generally prefer subs to dubs, though, unless there is a lot of English being spoken.
I wouldn't want to watch Beck as a dub, though I know there is one, because the notion of "I can't understand xxxxxx" doesn't fly as easily.
Yeah, that's true.
Having watched the anime and live action movie first, I was surprised by how effective the original manga was at portraying the music scenes.
big screens
I wonder if the people who had TV's the size of a computer desk with a screen the size of a mouse pad felt the same way when TV screens increased to 17" size, haha. The manufacturer's don't care about if you are watching old stuff, it's all about the new. The future.
The thing that annoys me most is how all the new games have such tiny text that you can't read on a smaller screen. That's the only thing I don't like about the oncoming future of super televisions for all.
I think there is enough Gameboy here to not have to resort to the 4 shades of green color scheme. I like the white scheme. I used it for a while before switching back to black.
I'm sorry, but Beck Dubs all the way. I'll watch a dub if it has good voice acting and I haven't seen the sub yet. Read Or Die, Eureka 7, Lucky Star... Because the original audio track CAN have bad voice acting, and I'm not just going to give them a pass just because it's the original Japanese. English language dub can actually be better sometimes. I won't discriminate.
You really MUST read the manga for Beck. And the live action movie was quite good, too.
@ForABrokenEarth: haha, I'd never thought about having an issue with the accents. The main character in Read Or Die doesn't have any USA accent, I don't think. I can't really place it, though. I want to say it's Canadian, but I'm not really sure.
So... like... is anybody going to talk about anything other than anime? Maybe we should talk about something like New Entertainment Systems so that it looks like it's vaguely related to chipmusic even though it isn't.
I hate the new digital TV stuff that they forced everybody to switch to. At least with the old analog signal if there was interference it'd just get fuzzy and noisy, but with the new system it just skips and freezes so you can't even kind of watch your shows. It's so annoying. Better quality/Interrupted program is not a good trade-off.
To each his own, I like Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi No Apollon), Gurren Lagann, Towanoquon, Toriko, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Rainbow, Beck Mongolian Chop Squad, K-On!, Azumanga Daioh, House of Five Leaves...
ugh... too much variety...
These questions can be more easily solved if you come to the irc (there is a "Chat' link to a java plugin that will let you into the irc via browser if you don't have a client.)
I say this because I can't answer your question, but there is tech support in the chat
Edit: also, botb has a forums, too
512mb whyyyy?
No, but seriously... Have you tried Paint.Net? That's pretty nice. Some things can be slow, but it's always nice to have on your system.
for a second I thought this was a legit request :\
Xetryz, you can make another account but I don't think you can resubmit an already submitted song. Sorry.
4mat, we're not talking about chipmusic as a whole, we're talking about chipmusic.org specifically. There is way more to chipmusic than this place, but I don't have to tell you that. Just wanted to clear that up.
I love that chipmusic.org doesn't get involved in these things officially because I don't want it to be defined by anything other than the tools we all use to make music. The total lack of an officially recognised competition winning track, or event featuring a few of the hundreds/thousands of artists here makes it apparent that all people and styles are welcomed here, and no-one is officially better than anyone else in the eyes of "chipmusic.org". Isn't that something you want to protect?
Good stuff, and I totally agree. That's one of the things I like about the current way it is. There is no single "The Man" unit who passes his judgement on our musics.
All you're really asking is for
you lost me here, though. Erroneous assumptions are not nice
I wasn't even thinking of any kind of competition. I was thinking more along the lines of "compilation" (yeah yeah I know everybody hates those), Let's make [theme themed] music events, etc where anybody can participate, but where there is incentive to try hard. It's not about being validated, it's just about having fun and doing something creative together as a group. No prizes. No money. Just time and creativity.
I just like it when things like that are sanctioned by administration, but I understand your point about "just do it yourself". Like the Stockwave thing that just happened.
There are plenty of places in chiptune that already do all of those things. Why can't this just be a nice place to talk/trade and nothing more?
I've given this a lot of thought since that question was asked, and I honestly have no problem with cm.o staying the way it is. While I think the things mentioned above would be nice and good, I don't feel them to be crucial. I am disappointed that cm.o doesn't participate in them, but I'm sure there is a good reason, and I can think of a few. I can also think of a few ways in which that type of thing would be good, too, though.
I mean, there are so many members who have been here for years and years and, as I was not around to witness the history of it's development, I wouldn't want to just come in and start saying "you should do this and this and this because the community should be like that". Plus it's good to have different types of sites that fill different niches. This place wouldn't be thriving like it is if y'all weren't doing something right.
But I am but one man. (still kind of wish cm.o could do SOMETHING community wise, at least once a year)
Idio: Maybe you should check out the "Chipmusic everyone should have" thread, and/or try finding chipmusic in a style that he already likes. Or, you know, just share the stuff that you like personally.
BTW, the #chipmusic irc channel on the irc.esper.net server is a great place to ask random questions that you wouldn't necessarily want to create a new thread about for whatever reason. It's not very active all the time, but there are a bunch of people there and I've never had a question go ignored. For an IRC client I recommend mIRC or HydraIRC. If anybody has questions on getting setup feel free to pm me.
At the very least you guys could avoid double-posting, ya know?
I'm still waiting on an explanation for that LSD Dream Emulator thread that somehow got the stamp of approval.
