im glad i dont go too far down the well of different posibilities for amps and mic placement, between me and my roommate, there are 2 cabs (sunn 212LH & marshall MG 412A), 3 guitar amps (crate GX-1200H, vox mini 3, squier champ15) a bass amp (behringer ultrabass bx300) &  PA head (shure vocal master).. pretty sure i'd still be recording... stuck with the crate head & the sunn cab

well, then find something you (or someone else) can donate for the prize... i for one can offer (assuming it still has the sav on it to make it a worthwhile prize) to donate a blip09 LSDJ cart even though i dont even know you or really think the site you have planned is really necessary.. imagine what could be offered up by someone who isn't broke and has talked to you before yikes

FireWire can be added to any PC, I have built in FireWire on my HP laptop, by you can get expansion cards for standard laptops

RCA ands svideo are slightly different ways to send the same signal, just svideo splits color data for better color quality...

if you decide when you eventually go for a mackie upgrade and that you'd like to multi-track (and have access to a computer with firewire), you may want to consider the Mackie Onyx 820i http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control … ;A=details very similar to the vlz series, but slightly better EQs (one channel is 4 band and takes stereo or mono, the two mono channels have sweepable mids & can work as guitar or bass DI) plus each channel can be send to a separate channel in your  DAW over firewire .. overall though, mackies are solid as hell
for cheaper brands, tapco & soundcraft are both pretty good options and even behringer's do fine in a pinch or just in live settings, just tend to be less durable and develop noise issues over time
