i haven't heard many artists using dpcm bass but I'm not aware of every artist..i guess it won't hurt to make one smile

Hi guys,
just wondering, would anyone benefit from a tutorial on doing the Sunsoft DPCM bass trick (see Journey to Sillius or Gimmick or Fester's Quest songs) for famitracker? I recently did a collaboration and did some 303 styled stuff and just wondered if anyone would care/need a tutorial. My guess is there is one out there (probably more thorough what I'd make) that already explains it and I just didn't know about.

HDMI resolution instead of stretched out graphics on your big screen. Wireless controllers. Thats why I want one…

Also, I bet most chiptune lsdj carts and stuff WILL work, they just don't support it if it doesn't.

It's not the most chiptune-centric setup ever. iMac running Logic Pro, NI KA6 audio interface, some AV40s, Gameboy with LSDj (mostly I use chipsounds these days) Guitars and about 100 different software synths on the inside.

Smells like Jazzmaster/Jaguar

It's a Fender Strat actually.

One of the best with that wav channel sample BASS!

Game is crappy but the music is amazing!

it's a really unique piece. Cluck is still the best song ever however.

i am actually working on an article on this, but here's a few quick things

-take a small section of a song you like, try to build something in a different direction off it, for example Devo's Whip It! is based on a few notes of 'pretty woman' transposed slightly and then they built the song around that. tons of rock songs are based on bits of beethoven or mozart, they had melody flying out their butts

-think about a song in your head, don't sit with a guitar or keyboard and try to figure it out, hum your idea and then try to put it into actual instruments

-record jams - play with friends, build loops and add things and record them, for hours even, Radiohead's Idiotechque was based on a few seconds of a 9-hour long recording of johnny greenwood playing with various synths and samples, the rest of the mix he describes as 'total trash', lots of bands compose like this, its time consuming but at some point that 'magic happens', you can jam by yourself with multi track recorders (sort of…)

-one thing i personally do is come up with a little riff, play it and then think in my head what should follow..what it needs…start with verse /chorus and then build from there.

as you can see there's no one method, and one is the exact opposite of the other..

You will def get better results if you prelimit/dither/eq your samples before import. In fact almost all the samples ive put into lsdj sound way better/louder than the stock kits as a result.

So far, no matter what I do, anything musical has a screechy static on it. I'm playing with Ozone's various dithering algorithms. maybe i'll come up with something eventually..i made a blade runner/bass synth that actually sounds pretty great, so it gives me hope!

I migh as well share my idea with the experts, since I don't see how I'd ever pull it off myself anyways big_smile

Maybe this is stupid and impossible, I'm not technical but maybe it could be awesome. I've fiddled with making custom kits on the gameboy with LSDj. I've experimented with voices, synths and made some bass sounds that came out half-way decent.

I started thinking of two possible ways to improve the quality of the samples you're sending in;

1) applying things to the initial sample using more modern programs, things like dithering that are used to sort of change the sound on a base level. I know the lsdj import tool has dithering but I'm sure there'd be advantages or a way to use a more flexible dithering program to improve the overall sound.

2) Phase inversion/canceling. I have seen experiments where one frequency or tone can be created to cancel out another. I had the thought of using 2 gameboys running LSDJs and using a sample in one to cancel out or null some of the harshness or static tones coming out of the actual wav sample you want to hear on the other unit.

Is this crazy talk? Just trying to think of new ways to push the envelope...

Hi guys, I'm doing some tedious, but promising experiments with samples on the gameboy. I'm working with a non-chip-affiliated audio engineer who has some cool ideas, but I don't have the technical expertise to give him everything he needs for our latest experiment.

Does anyone know the Frequency Response for the Gameboy? Or where I could find that information?

Love that mixer! I would buy one of those!!

Never heard of tasting before..

I get an image of colors in my mind when I hear things. Like 'that sounds blue' or 'thats green'. I think i like chip so much because arps are like crazy rainbows in my mind.
