I believe (apeshit) ASMRetro had a stack of these - he's been on hiatus for a while now but I think he's still active on the forum (I could be wrong..). Worth sending him a pm!
Have been experimenting with some different video modes to make the most of the Arduino Micro's limited resources.
Here's an example of a text-mode game, using 8x8 characters gives 20x18 characters on the 160x144 LCD (this could easily be turned into a graphics tile mode as well by replacing the characters with tiles):
The great advantage of text-mode is that the screen buffer is only 360 bytes (20x18) as opposed to 2,880 bytes (160x144 / 8)!
That is awesome! Many kudos to you~~ I am currently working on a little project using tiles on an arduino w/ one of those old nokia 5110 lcd's - I think i'll be able to adapt it to this really well! I'm excited
Always wanted a white gameboy and painting the clear guy from inside looks like a go to me. I tried Krylon flat white on a piece of clear plastic. Result was pretty nice but a bit sort of bubbly. Perhaps I was not careful enough... Anyways
- should I choose a better brand? - should I use the adhesion promoter? - how should I approach hard to reach regions (like the area near the cartridge compartment on the back shell).
Anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks! This forum is a fantastic source for mod advices and ideas!
Update: Darn! Should've posted on Nintendo handhelds
Krylon's work really well from experience - make sure the housing has been scrubbed clean and dried before you spray it though. Housings are fairly easy to come by (broken gameboys etc) depending on your area so just give it a shot! What's the worst that could happen?
So... People who have played it (assuming you're still visiting reality every so often, and not totally dissolved into the game): how is it? How does it compare to previous Pokemon games, apart from the 3D part obviously. Similar kind of experience? I'm considering getting myself an xl to play it on, but need a little convincing first, I think.
Better than B/W/B2/W2 (not hard to beat those shit titles.. haha!) It's amazing and nostalgic to see them make use of so many old (original 150) pokemon. I think they've done it justice too! 3D was really well implemented. Even general gameplay in non-3d. Wireless connectivity / implementation could be better.
I've been playing on my 3ds and the battery has been dying pretty fast (only a couple of gameplay hours per charge). I'm gonna sell my 3ds tomorrow and go and buy an XL.

this game has pretty bad lag but it's still v cool
The lag IS noticeable however it's only when playing in 3D mode (which i only do 1/4 the time)
I'm hyperventilating right now, holy god. Only question: WHY DOES THE BLUE HAVE A STANDARD SCREEN PROTECTOR!?!?!
I literally have an identical set that i bought from ebay for (slightly) more than that. Little did i know that some of the screen protectors for the PIL's had been swapped for normal ones! Such a killer! Nothing $9 worth of parts didn't fix!
Pic: (very much related) It cost me $650 AUD for everything in this photo. Sadly the Blue PIL is slightly discoloured on the front panel and looks more of an aqua colour
