ok heres the happy notes

C D E F G A B C

heres the sad noes

C D D# F G G# A# C

if you want to make a chords you just pick a note, the one two above, th one two above

C D E F G A B C
  ^ ^ ^
D F A - a chord
C D D# F G G# A# C
    ^ ^ ^
D# G A# - a chord
C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C
          ^ ^ ^
A C E - a chord

if youw ant to make a really professinoal chord you can extend the process once more

C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C
      ^ ^ ^ ^
F A C E - a cool chord

also you can swap the notes. like if you have FACE You can also have ACEF and ECFA and so on to make cooler chords

you can also use different notes

then when youre doing your melody what you can do is use the notes that make the chord OR notes that makea a better version of the chord

say you already have F A C (F chord) and you want to put a note over it
you could put F, A, C, over it if you wanted

or you could put a note that makes it into an even cooler chord

C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C
      ^ ^ ^ *
yeah, E is a good note on the F chord

but! E sounds really weird over and F chord, so maybe you should play F, A or C afterwards, to relax the ear muscle after the tension of the weird chord

why does E sound really weird over the F chord? it is to do with the gaps between the notes:

C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C
^ ^ adjacent notes sounds weird
^ ^ a gap of one sounds really good
^ ^ a gap of two sounds ok but not great
^ ^ a gap of three sounds excellent, but boring
^ ^ a gap of four can sound excellent or boring
^ ^ a gap of five sounds weird
^ ^ a gap of six? huh this is the same note. it sounds the same

this is true not just from C but from any of the notes, it is about the gaps not the actual notes. it even applies to the sad notes...

also you can see that some gaps are related to each other

C D E F G A B C
^ ^ ^
 one four
E is either one or four away from C depending on your worldview

which is called Inversion (because you turn the gap upside down!)

so whats the point of all this gaps stuff
well, when youre making your melody you know some extra stuff

if you have a C chord, a good note for your melody over the C chord would be E (happy) or D# (sad)
however!!! no one likes a melody that is always sounding good, it gets boring (imagine a film that is happy the whole way through)

what the real master composers do is use a bad or weird sounding note, and then switch to a good sounding note (imagine a drama film with a happy ending)

so you could have your chord A C E
and over it you could play C (good) and then play D (wow, weird) and then play E (nice!)

if you just played C and E your listener would be bored

REPETITION

repetition is important as hell. lets check out a popular song:

ten green bottles sitting on a wall
ten green bottles sitting on a wall
if one green bottle should have a little fall
there'll be nine green bottles, sitting on a wall
...

see how this song repeats? but it doesn't just repeat over and over again, it varies a bit, does a different bit, and then goes back to the start. if you do this with your melodies and chords you will have great success

the end
thanks for reading my guide to musical theory

All I'm saying is that it's not a good starting point. Chiptune is my favorite genre too, but it's just not something I think about when I evaluate someone.

If you are worried that you won't be able to listen to chiptune or any other music that you really like when your partner is around, then there must be something wrong with that relationship.

idk dude everyone in the chpiscene is cool so its already pre selected down to just cool people. also we could read each others forum posts and ebay rep to  see if think we are going to get along before even agreeing to a date?

why don't you start a chipmusics dating site? there are lots of other niche dating sites like HIV+ and Star Trek and 420 and vegan.

i dont really know enough about php/mysql... can you make groups on okcupid? we could make a chiptune group on there

hi i have been thinking about chiptune dating

whats your experience of chiptune dating? whats the best approach to get a chiptune dates?d o you approach them online or do you go to the shows

have any of you had successful chiptune dating experiences or notably unsuccessful chiptune dating experiences?

thanks

damn i had high hopes for thi s thread based on the title

my tastes are really orthogonal to genre so its hard to say

i like kate bush but not justin timberlake (pop), i like boris but not ac/dc (rock), i like mineral but not arctic monkeys (indie), i like clark but not four tet (idm), i like viper but not kanye (rap), i like agathocles but not metallica (metal), i like anton maiden but not mac plus (vaporwave), i like [REDACTED] but not [REDACTED] (chiptune), i like k d lang but not that bloke who sings ironically about trucks and sex (country), i like akiko yano but not [?? idk any other jpop artists] (jpop), i like acid king but not acid bath (sludge metal bands with acid in the name)

uh... hopefully that gives you an idea of my tastes in lieu of a concrete list of genres

why not release any old thing that comes into your head?

yeah, why not?

Why not make all your songs 10 minutes longer than they need to be?

yeah, why not?

An artist who edits their own work ruthlessly may not produce a lot of material, but maybe the material is deeper and more enriching.

i would have thought "depth" as a concept was related to having a lot of something

Not to say there's anything wrong with being prolific and releasing a lot of stuff, but there's inevitably something lost there.

theres inevitably something lost when you dont release songs. namely ~the songs you dont release~. im not sure what you lose by releasing songs and then also releasing other songs

We all have limited time and ability, and there's a lot to be said (though it doesn't get said often these days) for using what you've been given to make something as good as possible rather than making as much of it as possible.

this topic is about "release formats" not about how many songs to write or how much of your time to dedicate to writing songs. in fact it gets said every day all the time by everyone that "quality > quantity" but thats not what this thread is about

ive accumulated quite a lot of theory knowledge over the years & the only bits of it that are useful to me on a day to day basis are
- knowing a minor scale
- knowing a major scale
- the basics of counterpoint

besides that ive learn more just from collabing with friends and messing around

ofc it depends on what your goal is because some music is more formulaic/theory  based and other is less so
