Did some digging and the Sunsoft 5b is what is found in Gimmick!. Gremlins 2, Tokyuji Dodge Danpei and Batman have been said to contain either a 5a, 5b or fme7, but very rarely can you actually find the 5b. The 5b of course has the capability to produce extra sounds whereas the others do not. The above mentioned games besides Gimmick! do not use the extra audio at all.

I cannot imagine designing anything around the Sunsoft 5b since you'll pay an arm and a leg just to find one...

I could do it from that, but we would still be missing the ROM and PIC program. I would hate to reproduce it from that since i prefer to probe my traces while reproducing, but I just found out that the 62256 is still being made!

Lol @ Arduino. Arduino is a development tool and has so much bloat that you pay for without ever using. All you need from an arduino is the Atmega and crystal. the Atmega happens to be cheaper than the on-board FTDI! (granted the model)

vote: most depressing thread of the year.

My goal was not so much h to pull a synthcart but to  ramble ideas. Call me a thread stealer.:P
I understand though; no mbc for simplicity. I can see you getting a load of hard coded sounds in there since you're only going to bother with the button and sound interrupts and registers. Samples though would be a little more difficult to get into the 32k...

Which channels are you interested in using again, all four? And how many sounds were you thinking of programming?

Oh. Very nice.
Wild idea but what would it take to get that from under 8k? I am tearing into a few Sega genesis carts that utilize serial sram and I wonder if its possible to load he rom onto the GB internal ram and run from there.

Any reason why you wish to use only generated sounds?

64m USB cards CAN be programmed via the ems flasher via cart edge connector

Both banks? now that I think about it, you're probably right. I misinterpreted something I had read a while back.

The EMS carts cannot be programmed via the edge connector, only via USB. It sounds like yo don't have administrative priveledges on your compy.

I also suggest staying away from EPROM's and stick with EEPROM's.  You won't need a UV eraser, saving
a couple of bucks, but if you are looking to burn EPROM's for the Atari, you may not have a choice.  Hard to
get Flash memory now in that size.

This was the point I wanted to make since Jeff covered everything else very nicely, but above all else, read the datasheet. wink

One mistake that a lot of beginners make is letting the unused Address pins float. These must be connected to either high or low.
Thoroughly read this page for an explanation on ROM memory organization:

haha a game boy for a midines? thats a pretty bad trade offer

I have sold gameboys for more than what MIDI NES runs for. It depends on what you put into it.

Console <> cart = Chicken <> egg.

Besides, I don't even want it; I am not a musician. For all intents and purposes, I could probably return the cart in same condition within a month and have all that I need from it. All I really need is to borrow one and sit down with it.

So here is the deal. If someone can get a copy of MIDI NES to me, I can recreate it.
I can recreate MIDI NES and begin a new production line of it at an affordable rate. This I promise. I am even willing to trade one of my for-sale GB's for one.

For those who are interested, the components for the second run are on their way.
At that point, I may just share my brd/sch files since nitro is working a better programmer.

I have other projects that we must get made in the mean time!
