I remember seeing a dj perform with Minusbaby a few years back at Blip Festival- it fit really well, actually. I was wondering when someone was going to make that a major part of their act- I say go for it.

If your battery contacts have corrosion and you don't have rubbing alcohol, vinegar also works.

My backlit game boys don't really have any difference in sound from the non-backlit ones. It may be that thing you installed to sharpen the pixels (biversion i assume?) that has that effect on the sound. I don't know for sure, since I've never done that modification. Good luck figuring it out, let us know if you can isolate the issue.

So far so good. the best way to remove the gunk is to us your finger and rub it- the ridges in your fingerprint actually work pretty well to get that gunk off. In the future though, try and remove the back film so that the gunk sticks to the film and not the glass. A razorblade might help with that. It also helps to remove left side of that plastic bracket first so you have more room to work with.
Do be careful though- bending the ribbon cables too much will eventually cause them to break. Trying to get the gunk off can sometimes result in overbending of these ribbon cables, so anything you can do to minimize bending them would be good.

love it. great sense of humor, dope flow (the kids still say dope, right?) and very well programmed beats.

I have another suggestion: You cannot play consecutive open mic months.

Just out of curiosity, how does open mic events work? Its just plug your instruments, play couple of songs, leave? Or do you get feedback or what? I havent ever witnessed such a thing so I'm curious.

The Pulsewave/8static version of open mic is 5 minutes per person, usually one song.
Generally it works if people are plugging in a game boy or something similarly portable, but occasionally it takes longer if people have more to set up.

THREE! fuuux i only saw the one from the video. ok, time to check out the whole thing!

I feel your pain. I had the same thing happen to me when I started out. You might want to look into getting a Mega Memory Cart to back up your EMS cart saves onto- They've been a lifesaver for me in many situations as well. They can usually be found for under $10:

Good luck in your search for a new non-EMS cart though, both the BleepBloop and Smartboy carts are a little harder to come by.

i have to say, .sylcmyk is one of the new masters of modern nanoloop. I saw him play at The Brick a few months back and he totally blew away most of what i'd heard from that app. The track on this compilation confirms his awesomeness.

The facebook event says the show is 9pm-12am.

What's the method you're using to get the audio into the computer? are you going in through a mic jack or through a dedicated audio interface using usb/firewire?

You can get good sound by using the mic jack if you gainstage correctly and don't blast the game boy too loud, but if you can use an audio interface, that'll likely give you a headstart in terms of sound quality.

You may also want to try using some EQ and maybe a touch of compression in Logic.  Also properly adjusting the levels on your instruments in LSDJ/nanoloop will help your songs sound more cohesive.

totally agree...

...but...

Everyone's gotta start somewhere. Terrible show experiences are the dues you pay to become a great performer.

Totally. There will be bad shows. I don't think any live act who's played more than a handful of shows could possibly say otherwise. Everything will go wrong. Learn from the mistakes/mishaps and bad situations and soldier on. It'll be worth it.

Some of my favorite gigs have been the Handmade Music ones, in which chip music acts played with experimental electronic artists using monomes, hand-built guitar controllers, and piezo mics attached to sails tied to women's hair.  It allows for cross-pollination between scenes and it's definitely a nice ego boost getting good feedback from newcomers to chipmusic.

Also, I remember playing one gig that got double-booked with icelandic pop acts so we had two stages and switched off shortened sets. Fans were definitely made that night on both sides of the table.

SO yeah...I think Peter's right.  It's good to play within the scene but it's time we all got a little adventurous. Let's play with some punk bands, some pop bands, some crazy out there art-psych-rock bands and see what happens. I feel like it'd be a good thing.

Also jellica I'm totally jealous you got to open for max tundra. dude's incredible.

Have you tried cleaning the pins on the cart and the cart slot?

The sweep command only works on the pulse 1 channel. Maybe you're using it in PU2?

Yeah, apparently this was a common issue for people. It's not hard to replace the casing if you can find the correct screwdriver to do it. Game boy color carts should be easy/cheap to acquire as well.
